Kindle Paperwhite, Part 2 - help! :)

So I received my PW today - have it set up. I’m confused how to get books I order from Overdrive (through my library) onto the Kindle. From what I have researched Overdrive should be compatible with Kindle - but Hoopla is not?

I have the Kindle app downloaded on my phone as well. And Overdrive app. I thought it might actually be easier to download via my phone and then read from the PW. Yes? No???

Should I be downloading an Overdrive app ON the PW? I have the Goodreads set up, no problem.

I am also seeing something on Overdrive about another app, “Libby” which seems to be for Kindle books. So do I need that instead of OD?!

Complicated!!

Can’t help with Overdrive, but I definitely borrow books through the Libby app (free app).

@MaryBarbara58 , do you borrow books through Libby onto your Kindle? If so, how do you do it? Where do you have the Libby app and how to you get it to sync with your Kindle?

Our library uses Overdrive. Once I send the book from overdrive I have to log into my amazon account and send it to my kindle. You can do that under content and devices. Good luck and hope you enjoy the kindle.

@Dancer41, “content and devices” on Overdrive or the Kindle app?

Our library uses overdrive too. When you check out the book in overdrive, there will be a ‘read now with kindle’ button. Click on that and it will take you to amazon… I don’t even have to login to amazon anymore after clicking, maybe after you do it once it remembers? Then in Amazon, on the book’s page on the right side there will be a yellow box/button that says ‘get library book’. Below that is a gray box where you define the device you want the book delivered to, for you it will be something like ‘abasket’s kindle’. When the device is set, click the yellow box to send the book to the kindle app on your kindle.

I think I got it! Through Overdrive, downloaded the Libby app and then signed into my Kindle app to transfer - opened my PW and the book downloaded.

I’m terribly impatient to figure things out! But some success.

Glad it worked! The way @Mwfan1921 described is the way it works without the Libby app. Just overdrive and then to amazon. Happy reading!

Thanks all! Happy reading right back at ya!

Just be sure you download to the kindle itself, my Amazon site now gives its cloud as first choice and I’ve had to change to the device. I use Overdrive directly as above.

Once you’re done with a book you can long click (leave finger pressed) on the title and among the options will be a return book to library- a nice thing to do. You can then delete the book from your device. On your computer kindle site you can select the borrowed expired books and delete them. You get a silly email from Amazon but that is easily deleted.

Opps, didn’t see this! Looks like the kindle is working!

Glad you figured it out! I’m pretty sure I just downloaded the Libby app on my iPhone. When I found the book I wanted to borrow (again, on my phone), it then asked me if I wanted to send it to my kindle.

My biggest gripe is I have to read the book in 21 days, so sometimes I feel rushed. I saw someone in the other thread said to put my kindle on airplane mode, so I’m trying that.

It’s a good idea to keep your Kindle in airplane mode, anyway, because the battery drains slower.

Good idea on the airplane mode for both battery and possibly keeping a title longer. 21 days IS a short time period for me.

I mentioned the tip to my husband, and he said it’s “cheating”. Does anyone know if the book actually gets taken back? I’ll know in a few days and get back to everyone!

I have had library books removed from my device before I finished it. Keep an eye on the return date and put it in airplane mode if you only need an extra day or two.

I keep my Kindle in airplane mode when I am slow reading the library book. If you go to your Amazon account it will have been removed and returned on time. When you next turn off airplane mode and connect it wil remove from your Kindle too. I had to do that for The Nix since I was really slow getting through it for the book club.

I also would not download more than one or two borrowed books at a time. My reading time is limited so I know I’m not going to get through more than a book or two in the alloted time. No need to over download.
