Kindle tips and help

Exactly what I was going to say! Life is short. I don’t splurge on much but I buy what book I want when I want it. Usually I read a sample first - what a great perk.

I don’t like having to chase a book around.

When I was a kid in a small town I learned to put books on reserve at the town library. I also learned that it took forever to get to the top of the list. I resolved back then that someday I would buy whatever book I wanted to read whenever I want. And I do.

Interesting. I have an ancient Kindle – in fact, I just had to replace the charging cord, as the “rubber” or whatever at the ends had evaporated away.

When I buy from Amazon, I am often offered the option of having something ship a few days later in exchange for a “digital credit.” I use that credit for watching a Prime video or for a Kindle purchase.

I really really prefer hardcopy books, but I use my Kindle when I travel so I’m not dragging 10 pounds of books with me.

I usually don’t have a long wait from the library if I put a book on hold, but I am finding that more and more and more books are only available as ebooks from my library. Very annoying, to me.

I have both apps on my phone (I don’t read via the kindle app though but it is on my phone) but I don’t lose the books as long as my actual Kindle is in airplane mode.

Like @MaineLonghorn I keep mine on airplane mode except when I’m downloading a book. And it 100% makes the battery last longer.

Is there a way to remove the book cover from the newest Kindle Paperwhite and not delete it from the cloud? There are old books from my husband that came over when I first got my kindle. While they are not downloaded on my kindle, the covers still show, so clutter up my screen! I have spent way too much time searching how to do this, but I don’t have the Remove from Device option, either on my Kindle, or under Manage You Content and Device on Amazon.

I probably could just delete then totally as I don’t think I would ever read most of these, but was trying to avoid that if possible. I haven’t figured out if the Remove from Device option is just missing from my Kindle, it isn’t an option on the newest version; maybe I need to do a reset, but it also isn’t an option within Amazon.

You can set the filter to only show downloaded books. At the top left of your screen just under the search bar there are three lines. Tap on them. There will be a number of options for what you would like your library to display.

Edited to add: I have to take that filter off when adding new books and then tap the books to get them downloaded then put the filter back on.

I was amazed to discover that I could get a library card from a library on Cape Cod with nothing but my NYS driver’s license. My library system was missing the second book of a trilogy that is part of a longer series I’ve been reading. I was beginning to think I was going to have to buy the one book, but it turned out the Cape Cod library system had it as an ebook. My husband has access to the NYC library system because he works (ed) in the City.

@my3girls Thank you so much! This was driving me crazy and everything I search would come up with Remove from Device, which I don’t seem to have, or on Amazon. It was a small problem, but I didn’t want to see books I was never going to read!

I’m glad to see that someone recommended BookBub; I get a lot of cheap books that way.

Otherwise, I borrow from library systems. I read 2-3 books a week, and I could never afford to buy that many. You can check to see which public libraries allow out-of-area users to have library cards. Many do, especially if you’re willing to get a card that’s good only for ebooks. I have regular library cards for 3 counties near me in California. It’s a regular card, but I check out only ebooks.

New books come to libraries on Tuesdays (I find that some libraries add the record on Monday nights). I have a list of authors I like, and every now and then I look up either the author’s website or their Amazon site to see when their next book is coming out. Then I use a text messaging app to schedule a message for my phone on the day their next book comes out. Because I have so many holds, the long wait doesn’t bother me as much.

I tried the trick on my Kindle to return a book a day late, and it worked.

eta: I forgot to mention that most public library websites have a “new books” page where you can see what’s come out recently.

Ohhhh thanks for this tip! Had no idea DOD had a library. H is retired military and I just linked them to my Libby app. Wish me luck in getting some more current titles!

I don’t have my Kindle with me but I thought you could hold down a title in your library and then some choices (like doing a right click) would come up including “remove this title from library “

Unfortunately, I don’t have that option; not sure if it changed with the newest update. When clicking on the 3 dots on a book title, the closest option is to remove download, which would still leave the book cover, or permanently delete, which would remove the book from the cloud.

@my3girls solution did exactly what I needed! I did permanently delete the ones I knew I would never read, but kept a couple that there was a slim chance I might read, but don’t have to see the covers on my home screen!

In Colorado you can get a library card for any library in the state once you have the card from the county you live in. You can also return a book from any library to any library, so if you borrow a book when on vacation in Vail you can return it in Denver (but just get an ebook!)

You can also drop your ballot (we vote by mail) in any box in the state and the Clerks will get it to the right county. Modern life.

I’ve also learned that the library has museum tickets for certain museums that are free. They are hard to get and you must be online 30 days out but who doesn’t want to see the Molly Brown house for free or the train museum?

I love libraries.

I believe you can also do what you are asking about in the Amazon website (not the app) if you make your way to the “Content and Devices” or something like that. I know I’ve done it once or twice, just can’t remember the specific steps

@JustaMom5465 That was my initial problem; I didn’t have the option on my Kindle or Amazon to just remove from the Kindle. The only option was to permanently delete from Amazon, meaning if I decided to read any of these books, I would have to repurchase them.

I just permanently the ones I knew I had no interest in, and used the filter to show only downloaded books like @my3girls suggested. While everything that came up when I googled, as well as on Amazon, stated that I should be able to just select the Remove from Device option, none of the books had that option on either my Kindle or on Amazon under Manage Your Content and Device. I am good with my work around.

Ahhhh, I gotcha now. 99% of the time I’m just trying to delete expired library lends…so a whole different animal.

I’m not sure if this is the best place to ask this question – I can start another thread if need be.

I have a Kindle that is really really old. It is not very responsive – eg, when I touch the screen for the next page, it takes a long beat before it changes to the next page. Also, a few of the pixels don’t work. As a result – and maybe for other reasons too, like I’m old-fashioned – I haven’t enjoyed reading books on a Kindle.

If I were to upgrade, what is the best, newest Kindle available?? And why is it so good?

Features of the Kindle that are good (and mine is 5 + years old)

  • decent lifespan
  • Can change the font size or the font itself
  • Good battery life when on airplane mode
  • Fast page turning
  • Inexpensive accessories these days like magnetic cases
  • Paperwhite able to read without issue in bright sunlight

There’s a start!

Editing to say I realize mine is not new. Hopefully someone chimes in with newer features as well

My favorite thing about my Kindle is that I don’t have to fuss with a book light while reading in bed.

My favorite thing about my kindle (paperwhite) is that I can read it on the beach and make the font bigger if I forget my reading glasses
