Since we have the iPhone thread, I thought Kindle deserved one too :bz

The new Kindle eReader is out (well available for pre-order)! Higher resolution screen, buttons for page turning (which I think is nice), slightly different body design (I like how there is no gap between the glass and the body). Unfortunately, it also looks like the battery life is shorter, which to me is a pretty major negative.

Overall, it looks really nice, but I am not sure if it’s worth upgrading to it from the Paperwhite.

I’ve just about stopped using my kindle due to the high price of the books now. It seemed it was worth it when they were $9.99 and under…but I can get the real book (soft) at Target,e tc. for the same price as an e-reader and then share with friends, or just go to the library. The only time I ever download a book anymore is in the middle of winter, when it’s freezing outside, I don’t have a book and I don’t want to go out. It’s a shame they got so greedy.

Does your public library have ebooks at all? I know different libraries have different selections, but it may be worth looking into! My library has a huge selection.

I agree, conmama. I have the original Kindle and love the concept, but I hardly ever buy books for it. I constantly dowload electronic audiobooks from the library, and occasionally borrow a Kindle ebook.

I wish they’d reduce the prices. The costs have to be so much lower for ebooks. And I wish I knew how the money was divided - how much does Amazon get, and how much goes to the author/publisher? I know that there have been some battles between Amazon and some publishing houses but I haven’t followed this.

I have yet to buy an ebook for my nook. In the past 2 years I have read at least 100 that I downloaded from my library for free. My local library is one taxing district where I am getting my moneys worth!

I love my Paperwhite!!! But basically have ridiculous ereader lust so would love the upgrade if someone else was footing the bill, lol. I probably won’t splurge but will hint at it for a holiday gift.

In so far as e-book pricing goes, there are so many inexpensive ebooks on Amazon. Every month, they have a giant sale with plenty of good titles for $3.99 or less. And if you have a good library you can borrow them for free without leaving the house.

I love my Paperwhite, too! I got the Kindle subscription, so for a monthly fee ($9, maybe?), I can download a lot of books. Not ANY book, but they’ve got a good selection. I need to check out my local library, too!

I’m currently on my 6th Kindle and I absolutely adore it. I walk around with it everywhere. I also have ereader lust and have already printed out the specs for the new one to show my husband. I’m fortunate that I get gifts of Amazon giftcards at work for christmas and my birthday. WHich means I never have to come out of pocket for books. Although I would with no problem. I’m a big re-reader and like to hold on to my books forever. Anyone do Kindle Unlimited? I did the free trial and didn’t find it worth it, but I cop to being persnickety.

I carry it everywhere too, zoosermom (I don’t want a big bag right now, and I carry a very small Kipling bag, but I picked that bag specifically because it has a section JUST large enough to fit my Kindle. It goes everywhere with me!). I wonder if that also has to do with where we live (I know we are both in NYC area). For me, I use it so much on my commute!

I looked into Kindle Unlimited, but for me most of the books I wanted to read weren’t on there. I usually have an idea of the next 3-4 books I want to read, and I keep looking them up, and none of them are there. I will do the free trial, but I don’t think I am going to keep it unless they expand their selection.

Me too. And you know what’s funny? The shopping feature is ALWAYS disrupted in the middle of Times Square. I would love to know why.

That’s exactly why I cancelled. The selection was mostly books I wouldn’t even want to read if they were free. What I have been doing is making a wish list that my family can see and they buy from there. Four of us share the Kindle library on different devices, so it’s worth the money I spend. I’ve always been a book buyer. Now I don’t have to find space for them.

I regularly check the free e-books on Amazon. I’ve ended up reading some pretty lousy books and also some real gems that have stayed with me to this day. Free is a blessing since we are not yet done with putting kids though college.

I have an older kindle but now that I have an ipad, I do most of my kindle reading on that. I like the ipad better unless I have to carry it with me. It’s so much heavier than my kindle.

OK, now I have to investigate the mysterious Times Square Kindle Warp!

And in my studio apartment, I too would not have space for all the books that I have bought, not to mention how nice it is to carry a bunch of books when traveling.

bookreader, I am a big gadget person, but reading on a tablet just never appealed to me. It doesn’t look/feel the same as a Kindle. I tried reading on a phone and on a tablet, and it just never caught on for me. I love having the dedicated device. I also love not having all the distractions of a tablet - just the book in front of me, nothing else.

I get a daily email from BookBub. You tell them what you like to read and they consolidate the sale prices of $2.99 or less. There are usually one or two free ones. You click on the ones that sound interesting and it takes you into Amazon where you can read reviews and decide whether to download or not. Its a great service.
