Amazon.com has Kindles in stock and ready to ship today.

NEMom2,
got mine just in time for DDs birthday.

She loved it. They are doing standardized testing this week. Chemistry teacher told the class “everybody just keep going while I play with X’s toy”

Math teacher had her put in under the overhead and deliver a lesson on what it is and how to use it to the whole class. LOL.

Those math and science teachers really do like the gadgets.

This is so cool…I guess I’ve been out of the loop. Just watched the demo on amazon. Didn’t hear if students will be able to download textbooks on it though? Any info on that?

The textbook idea would be great, but I can’t imagine that the world of ridiculously-priced college textbooks would remotely jump into that game.

[Main Page - Gutenberg](http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page)

I didn’t know if you could read these public domain books on a kindle but I can read them on my palm pilot

I want one so badly – but I think I am going to wait a few years. My library has tons of E books plus those available online (like those at the Gutenberg project). I know that some college textbooks are now available online (for a cost, but cheaper than paper). I want a reader where I can purchase E books on amazon AND read the ones I can check out at the library. I think it will come to that in a few years – plus, from what I have read online it seems like the kindle/sony e-book reader are just the beginning and that the capabilities will increase and price will go down in a few years.

If only I didn’t have children – I could buy all those cool gadgets without worrying about making the most cost effective purchase. But I guess kids are more fun than gadgets.

O.O $400?!?! Ridiculous. I’ll wait until Costco has them, thanks.

But I guess kids are more fun than gadgets.

Agreed.
well mosttimes
I love my ipod
and you can read on your iphone too!

Does anyone know how paying for downloads for the Kindle works? If I give my son amazon.com gift card will he be able to download books using only the Kindle?

Yes he will.
