Pros and cons? I am trying to preserve the colonial look of the house. It came with painted cabinets that looks perfect for the house. It is old and time to redo the kitchen. I love the painted cabinets but paint is chipping here and there. I am afraid painted cabinets aren’t as durable. Any thoughts?

The chips in the paint can be fixed by the right painter with the right paint, so well that you’ll never even notice. If the existing painted cabinets look perfect for the house, why change?

And stained cabinets get chipped as well. That’s why they give you those magic marker-type things – to cover up those chips.

If you love the paint touch them up. It’s definitely more authentic (as much as built in cabinets can be authentically colonial!)

We need more cabinets and some re-configuration. Part of the kitchen is empty looking a bit awkward. It would look better if we filled it with cabinets. We did some repaint job done. It didn’t look right. I was looking at WoodMode painted cabinets. They looked good. Good colors and looked to last. Less expensive cabinets didn’t have good selections.

Speaking of authenticity, should we keep hardwood floors, too? I was wondering if we shouldn’t put in tiles. Our dog goes in and out all the time and the finish near the door is wearing out.

I vote for keeping the hardwood floors. Put a rug near that doorway! We wanted to add cabinets to one spot in our kitchen and found we could not match the stain. If you go for painted cabinets, seems to me a good painter can repaint and match the old ones to the new.

I’m not a fan of wood floors in kitchens, but I realize I am in the minority. I’m thinking about cork tiles for the next remodel.

I like hardwood floors, but I also have " persian" rugs in my kitchen.
I also like painted cabinets, unless you have really spectacular wooden cabinets.

I like wood- but not quite as much as in an arts & crafts bungalow.
Pretty to look at, but I think I would get tired of it, I like brighter kitchens.
I also would use tung oil, rather than stain the wood. But I have seen kitchens that I liked that had a mixture of painted & stained furniture & cabinets.

Tile can be pretty hard on your feet.

I’m a big fan of hardwood floors but opted out in the kitchen. I was tired of worrying about water damage from cooking and wet feet. We installed Duraceramic and I love it. Not as cold or hard as tile & incredibly easy to take care of. (If the hardwood floors were original to the house, I wouldn’t have covered them.)

We have hardwood floors in our kitchen. They are finished with Street Shoe which is what is used on bowling alleys. The floors will get refinished this summer after almost 20 years. There is no water damage at all. The wood in our house is continuous to every room on the main floor. Wood properly finished is very durable, and can then be refinished when the time comes.

We actually have softwood floors which I like even better than hardwood, because the markings of the past 100+ years, just add “character”, so not alot even a Saint Bernard, can do to it.
We used FloorFin which is a hard drying oil finish similar to Swedish finish but without formaldehyde. It was also ultra easy to apply.

Emeraldkity, do you have a Saint Barnard? (I have two).

I have wood floors everywhere but in my kitchen.

I want to know what to do with cabinets that are lightly stained a color you don’t care for. They are maple stained champagne so have a pink tinge to them. The counter is granite with red tones adding to that pink tinge.

I know you can take the doors off and have them painted/restained but then you have all the surrounds to deal with. Is painting the best choice and have the surrounds painted too?

We know many folks who had the cabinets refaced. This involves replacing the doors and drawer fronts. Then the cabinets themselves are refaced…sort of like a veneer is applied. Many also add crown molding or other trim. This is an especially good option if you have good solid cabinets and aren’t reconfiguring the kitchen. This is likely what we will do…we really like the arrangement of our very durable cabinets. When we want to replace the light oak, we will probably go for a light cherry shaker style.

My sister did new doors on her cabinets and painted the cabinets themselves. It also looks terrific.

I dont even have any pets.
Two Saint Bernards!:)

( I have had though, two kids, two adults, two cats & a black lab, all living in a two bedroom/one bath cottage!)

When I was little, our neighbors had a Saint Bernard named Robin. Very sweet.

Go for painted only, as the painted one suits your house why to think of any other. Just use the best material and if possible brush-paint them. Brushing is time consuming but they are more durable then Spray.

This is a strange topic for CC.

How about the water that hits the floor after they drink? :)

We had one. Glad we had vinyl flooring which was waterproof and scratch resistant!

OP, there was another recent thread debating brick, wood or slate floors in the kitchen of a colonial-style house. Might want to check it out. I don’t have time to search for it right now but it was within the last month or two, also in the caf

New Divide…this is the Cafe…where you can get info from knowledgable folks about just about anything…vacation spots, hotels, airlines, cars, appliances, floors, faucets, you name it! This section of CC is not about college for the most part. I have to say…when I need a suggestion…I post my query here first!
