If you have the cell phone number, is there any free service/directory to find out the name of the caller? Just curious, but not curious enough to pay $$$$ for the info. Thanks!

Reverse look up doesn’t always work with cell phones, but try sites like anywho.com. Sometimes you get the person, sometimes you only get the cell phone company, but give it a try.

Anywho says its reverse look up doesn’t work for cell phones. It didn’t even give the cell phone company. Thanks anyway.

Why not just call the number and ask? Shouldn’t be too expensive.

FYI, if I get a call from a cell phone, the name now pops up on my caller ID

Our cell phone caller ID just shows the phone number & no name (unless its a # in our contacts list). My D has been getting phone calls & text messages from some unknown person. She’s called & texted the individual asking him/her to stop contacting her but neither she nor we have any idea who it is that calls her. It’s not a huge deal, but mildly annoying to her & us.

Thanks for your thought anyway.

HImom. I would call her cel phone carrier and ask about blocking that number…I’m sure there is a way to do it. It is probably something innocent like her number is somebody’s old number. I love it when I misdial someones cel and then don’t leave a message. Then they call me and are all aggressive like “who are you? why did you call me?” but I am talking about one misdial, not repeatedly calling a number and hanging up or texting. Plus if she is answering those calls it is eating up your minutes. And yes, the name only pops up if they are in your contacts, it is easy for people to “block” their number by a cel phone setting so when they call your cel it comes up as Private Number. I never answer those calls, just let em got to message.

Or, consider speaking with the police. Your carrier should also have a department that deals with harrasing calls.

It is not just annoying. You pay for those calls and messages. (OK, at least the calls!)

Another idea:

Post the number here.

Each of us sends a text message that says “stop harrasing CC members” or some such thing. Their inbox explodes. Phone dies. No more problem.

Or, each of us calls and leaves a similar message. Same effect, with a huge phone bill.

JUST KIDDING

newmassdad-We actually did something similar when my daughter’s phone was picked up at a party. Rumor was it some guy had it, so we called it nonstop and texted for him to return it. Somehow her phone showed up in her dorm the next day!!

I do believe it’s something innocent & we’ve been expecting the caller to figure out that it’s not the right number. Not sure if she’s still getting the phone calls at this point any more, but was just curious about how to get names that are associated with cell phones anyway.

I know the pre-paid phones we purchased have no identity attached to them, so folks would have a tough time tracking the owner.

Snowball, so glad you were able to get your D’s phone back. I’m surprised the person didn’t just turn the phone off & wait for all of you to get tired of calling. Will have to think of that if someone ever “picks up” one of our phones.

Well, here’s a cute story at sort of the opposite end of the spectrum from snowball’s. Last spring, I got a call from a stranger. He had found a cell phone on campus, looked through the address book in it and called “Mom.”

Said he figured that was the best way to figure out whose phone it was and return it. I gave him DS’s dorm and by the time I called DS to tell him his phone was lost and had been found, the guy had already returned it. :)

What a nice guy! I’m sure he had good karma from his good deed! That is cute & resourceful of the stranger.
