So, the Yale alumni interviewer for my area is an English teacher who I’ve had for three years in class and for four years as a homeroom teacher. He knows me pretty well I guess so how would an interview work in this case? Are they required? I just feel it’s going to be super awk if he asks me interview questions as if he doesn’t know me… has anyone been in this situation before?

It’s highly likely your eng teacher will recuse himself and NOT interview you. If I were he, that’s what I would do.

I second that. When I was assigned to interview (for a different Ivy) the son of the family that sold me the house I live in now, I asked to have him reassigned.

That having been said, I’ll share a little story. The alum who interviewed me for Yale in 1980 was the grandfather of a girl I know fairly well, and a friendly acquaintance of my parents. His opening question to me was, “So, how’s your lovely mother?” I didn’t get in.

(P.S. What were they approaching?)

A teacher should never interview a student from the same school, period.

I agree with the others that this teacher shouldn’t interview you, but I wouldn’t worry about it all if he does. Don’t decline the interview.

thanks guys!

You’re in Connecticut-they will manage to find another Yale alum to interview you.
