Knox College, Thoughts?

I recently visited Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. I thought it was a great small town, and a beautiful old-looking campus.

I want to go to Washington & Lee but it seems to be a reach with my 30 ACT, 1280 (rough, I know) SAT, which really of lowers my confidence for SAT IIs. I did land a big internship in Springfield for an entire semester though (Illinois Governmental Internship Program) which only takes 10-15 from the entire state, and I am 2nd in my class of 60ish.

I really can’t get much of a read on how selective Knox is, or how reputable. One ranking I saw had Knox 16th in the nation for LACs, another I think in the 60s. It’s competing with Allegheny and Washington & Jefferson Colleges for top LAC after W&L.

I’m looking at majoring in political science.

Anything on Knox as compared to my other choices, or just Knox in general?

Thanks.

Knox is a very good LAC. don’t worry about exactly where it stacks up in the rankings. It’s a quality school and if it’s a good fit it should be on your list.

Your 30 ACT is a very good score, stronger than your 1280 SAT. Your ACT score corresponds to around 1360-1390 SAT, which would put you right around the median score for Washington & Lee.

Many colleges will take the ACT in lieu of SAT + subject tests; others require the SAT subject tests whether you’re submitting the ACT or SAT. Investigate closely. You can retake the SAT and try to up your score, or (at many schools) just submit the ACT.

W&L takes ACT or SAT, but there has to be 2 subject tests. So I plan on taking the ACT again, then 1 or two sittings of subject tests.

Knox is test scores optional, but the ACT should strengthen my case so I plan to submit it anyway.

Knox is in the ACM, which is an association of excellent LACs in the midwest. It’s a very good school, perhaps just a notch lower than Grinnell and Carleton in terms of admissions competitiveness. My sister went to Knox in the 80s and was very happy there, majored in Modern Languages.
