This is one of the coolest things I have ever heard of a “star” doing. And he is apparently making it very low key no publicity because my google search came up empty.

What a nice thing for him to do with no expectations of publicity. I remember seeing him with his other blowfish bandmates years ago on a talk show, telling how they all have houses on a cul-de-sac together.

I always thought his band was unfairly maligned by the critics. They did great pop tunes with more thought than lots of the stuff out there at the time. I still enjoy playing Cracked Rearview Mirror anytime.

Many of the country music stars do things like this with the same low profile. Maybe you don’t hear about it as much outside of Music City, but it’s pretty cool.

He switched in early 2008. In fact, he won the Country Music Association New Artist of the Year award (formerly known as the Horizon Award) in November 2009.

Some bands and some songs defy a single definition. H &BF were one of those bands [a really good band] and some of their songs, like ‘Let Her Cry.’ is a great song that can’t easily be pigeon-holed. If Rucker is a country singer now, it’s too bad there aren’t more like him. Contemporary country music is so much ordinary pop with the “gloss” of country music added for a superficial shine. There are no more Hank Williamses or Patsy Clines. I’m just saying.

yeah, they’re out there, LW. Just not mainstream country. There’s tons of music labeled alt country or Americana which is real music, not that pop pap that has become what most people think of as country.

To add some specifics: Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Wilco, Son Volt, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams III, the Flatlanders, Emmy Lou Harris, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Gillian Welch, etc etc.

I won tickets to see Hootie and the Blowfish a few yrs back…haven’t heard much of his newer music , since I am not a country music fan but I think he has a great voice. Very classy thing to do !

I had read about the ACM performance earlier in the week and saw it last night. Loved it! It is not uncommon at all for the VU homepage to picture country music stars interacting with kids at the VUMC. They are all to be commended!
