Is anyone familiar with assisted living facilities in the West LA or Santa Monica area? I’m just starting to do an internet search for my 86 y.o. MIL and would appreciate any recommendations. We’re on the east coast, but do have family in LA to follow up on suggestions. Thanks!

If you are willing to go to the Valley (south end), I know of a very good place. I’d have to get the name, but I know the exact location.

mimk6- I think LA family would rather have MIL closer to them. She would be relocating to CA and knows no one else in the area. BIL’s family is young, so lots of carpooling and other obligations, therefore trying to make location as convenient as possible. That said, “very good place” counts for a lot, so if you have a chance, would appreciate the name. (Does the valley get a lot hotter than LA during the summer? )Thanks.

The Sunrise chain is very good, but is significant bucks. There is one is Santa Monica, and several in West Los Angeles.

You might also consider working with a specialist in senior care. Look for “Integrated Care Management Providers” or “Geriatric Care Managers” or “Elder Care”. These are consultants who work on an hourly basis to assess needs and provide recommendations.

It’s The Village in Sherman Oaks and it’s quite nice. Yes, the Valley is significantly hotter during the summer than the other side of the hill. Not sure where your BIL lives, but you can drive over the canyon to get to this location. It might be worth considering if he has to slog through West Side traffic to go any distance – again, depends where he lives. I’m sure there are plenty of places on the West Side, but my MIL did an exhaustive search that led to this place for her husband.

mimk6: pschau…It is much warmer in the valley in summer. MUCH. But when it is spring and the westsiders have June Gloom, it is sunnier there.

My friends have family at the Village. They seem to enjoy it.

I have been in the Sunrise in BevHills (to vote). It is gorgeous. I believe it is very expensive, however. I know that there is a place in Westwood that used to be student housing. I think that a nice thing that this might include are events at UCLA. A friend had a father live there.

Ocean Villa in Santa Monica is nice. I think that the slog out to the Valley is pretty miserable, and getting worse.

Thanks for the suggestions, I’m following up on them. The valley got nixed though…

My mom was/is an Emeritus facility in Houston. What’s nice about going with a “chain” is that, at least in our case, if Mom was to come for a stay in New Orleans, she would be able to stay at the Emeritus facility without having to be “readmitted”, ie, doctor evaluation, etc. You may want to look into this since you are a bicoastal family. Most assisted living facilities are private pay, but some do have Medicaid beds. You can also apply for Veterans benefits if you’re in an assisted living facility as well. Also be careful if all meals are provided. Some facilities only provide two meals a day, and some don’t even provide weekend meals. You will have to assist your loved one with grocery shopping in that case, or at the very least, supplement the rent with money to buy groceries as well. Also look for an in house physical therapy group, as many elderly are prescribed physical therapy when health insurance permits. Also make sure they can assist with medication, if you have a fear of your elderly relative forgetting their medication. Also look to see if they do the laundry for the resident, or if they have to arrange that on their own as well.

Good luck on your search!
