I just got my Selection Weekend invite for the LSU LA-STEM Research Scholars program and I’m extremely nervous. I really hope I get selected to be a scholar partly because I need the money and partly because the mentorship/research opportunities are priceless.

My stats are
-31 ACT
-intended valedictorian
-a lot of volunteer experience
-in the International Baccalaureate Program (IB)
-hold 3 major club offices

What I think will hurt me is my low ACT score (compared to everyone else that will probably be there), my lack of experience in big time research (one girl I found trained wasps to be attracted to the scent of Tabasco, dead bodies and drugs), and my lack of big time awards (I have a 2nd place award in environmental engineering at a regional competition).

What I’m scared about is my chances of getting chosen. From what I pieced together, there really isn’t much info I can find, is that they usually select 18-22 students and around 190 students apply each year. Does anyone know how many people get invited to the Selection Weekend? Does anyone know what the interviewers are looking for and what I should mention and display? and most importantly, does anyone want to put in their opinion of whether or not I have a chance of being selected?
