LA to Boston road trip anyone?

DS has moved back to Boston and decided he wants his car there…(agreed. Stupid idea). Anyone know someone interested in a LA to Boston one way road trip? Anyone used a car transportation service? (Not a shipping service but the driveaway type?) We did this as newlyweds, moved from East Coast to West and drove someone elses car from NY to LA.

In the middle of winter? Wow, good luck. Anyone making that drive this time of year will likely encounter several bad bouts of dangerous driving weather along the way.

Yeah, actually DD and DH are going to NYC later this month but they are flying and tickets already bought. Likely we are going to sell car here and have him buy one out there (with snow tires!).

well a friend of D1s attended UChicago & used to visit her in Portland before he drove to school- but that was in late August-

I think the getting a replacement car there is much better idea- why put so much wear on a car- if you don’t have to?

Depending on the true worth of the car, why not sell it on the left coast and buy another on the home coast?

My sister-in-law used to drive a guy’s car down to Florida every year while she was in college. I think he just put the listing on the Harvard job board. I’ve done the drive three times (though only once relatively quickly.) If you aren’t too unlucky with the weather - highway driving isn’t that bad. I agree though that the wear and tear on the car makes it seem like a less than optimal plan.

ebeeeee, before driving the car to BOS I’d check if it has some must-haves for Boston weather (and not just tires that are easy to change). My friend was very unpleasantly surprised that adding a rear window defroster and heated morrors to her car would cost a fortune. She never needed that in San Diego and did not even think that it is something to look for when she bought that car :)

my daughter just left LA a couple of weeks ago . Weh ad a friend of hers , who took a semester off from school fly out and drive back to NJ with her. They took a more southern route than they did when she drove out in Sept '09 , just in case there were weather issues. I did look into transportation services ,but this plan just worked out better for her , since coming back home wasn’t what she really had planned…and now to try to find work on the east coast :D

We will be driving from LA to DC/VA sometimes in January. S’s employer will pay for moving expenses & for him to drive but will NOT transport the vehicle. We plan to make it a memorable roadtrip–H, me & S. D will wave us off as we leave her in LA to continue school. We may explore just leaving the vehicle with D for her use & buying another for S in VA/DC instead. Depends on how things go with D getting a license this break.

Sell the car in CA. Put the money in an account that DS can use for Zip Cars in Boston for things like going to Ikea…and for rentals (think Enterprise) for out of town trips.

If D gets her license this break & gets an internship or job that will require her to drive regularly to & from it, she may need the vehicle. Life continues to evolve. Don’t really understand availability (if any) of zip cars on her campus. Neither kid knew much about it but LA is a very difficult place to get around w/o a car, for the most part. Keeping options open & will see what happens. Don’t know about availability of zip cars for S in DC/VA either.

Himom, my post about the zip cars was for the OP whose son is in Boston…where zip cars are quite available and are used by many.

thanks all. After lots of back and forth we are going to give DS money for the car and let him figure out the rest. He is a 22 year old college grad after all! It is interesting working out these new relationships when they are finally financially separate!

OK, sorry for adding any confusion to this thread. Ebeeee, it sounds like you have reached a good resolution that will work for you. Our kiddo isn’t quite financially separate yet–his job doesn’t start until late January. It will be interesting when he does have his own full income & we will see how that works out. He is trying to be more responsible for his finances but so far, that hasn’t included filing his own taxes.

Let us know how the new financial independence goes with your DS.
