We may need your review of lunch.
It is DeLille! Voted 10-th best winery restaurant of 2026. They don’t up-charge the wine, so a $40 bottle of wine at the tasting room is a $40 bottle of wine at the restaurant. I will post some pics tomorrow. The lunch will involve some vino… with the cork saved for the “doggie bottle.”
We went to a Costco party once, soon after it opened. My friend, the hostess, had somehow gotten blank employee name tags. Even though name tags weren’t necessary, because most people knew most people, they were a fun touch.
I came home till Sunday; H stayed behind to get the 5th wheel ready for our trip later next week.
Tomorrow is a family get-together at #2D’s new house; I haven’t seen it since the evening before they moved in. We have so many tomatoes from the garden, and our neighbors gave more to H the other day, so a caprese salad will be my contribution (plus a couple of bottles of wine).
On Sunday, two sets of neighbors at our other home are co-hosting a party. The last time they hosted, it was in the small, old house that has now been replaced by something very large and very nice, I can’t wait to see it. It’s become a Labor Day tradition for someone(s) to provide a grill and hamburgers and hotdogs and everyone attending brings a side or dessert. It’s a nice end-of-summer gathering for the neighborhood. H is planning on baking brownies. I have to deal with the ferry, but going opposite holiday traffic so I should make it back in time.
We are on our way to the Heritage Festival Weekend at Lime Rock Park with Dh’s old Alfa. We are camping. We will make grilled chicken sandwiches with provolone and Giardiniera on crusty bread. I made a Texas chili and cornbread for tonight. Breakfast is biscuits with pimiento cheese, eggs and bacon. We normally eat pretty healthy but camping is a good excuse to splurge.
We planned to spend the weekend at our cottage with S. It’s been raining like crazy here, so we weren’t in the mood to drive across the state through the storms. We did that July 4th weekend, and it was dicey (had to pull off the highway for a tornado warning). Our cottage is on the lake & is the epitome of a “cottage” … not a vacation home … and frankly, the smell it takes on when it rains a lot is not my favorite. I was fine with putting off going out until today.
It’s still yucky, and now we’re probably going to wait to go out until tomorrow. Overnight, S live trapped a kitten that has been hanging out under his deck, so he’s staying home to deal with that. Tomorrow is supposed to be gorgeous weather, so we’ll head out tomorrow. We’ll have grilled steaks for dinner.
I LOVE snow cones! I also love ice.
I avoid travelling on Labor Day weekend, as I like to avoid crowds/traffic when traveling, as well as paying inflated travel prices. It’s also expected to rain in my area tomorrow. I will instead have a day trip later in the upcoming week, if weather permits.
Rather than traditional Labor Day celebration, I’ve been working on my sprinkler system. I just got my controller working shortly before type this post. The sprinkler controller has been getting increasingly unreliable for years. It started as time slowing when sprinklers were active such that if timer was set to 5 minutes per zone, it might instead run 8 minutes with the clock time being several minutes off after the run completed. It progressed to often not turning on at all a couple weeks ago, with unstable power. Fortunately it was fairly straightforward to resolve, with swapping out easy to access components.
When testing the controller, I noted a problem with the valve controlling one of the 9 zones, which I will update next, after getting the necessary parts.
You sound like my H - he enjoys getting things fixed! Actually, right now he is all-in on sanding & painting our shutters. Yes, everyone else just buys new shutters around here. But these are wood, not plastic, and they are the right size (no too-short or too-long shutters). And H loves doing it himself. He says that this is his last time painting them, so they have to last as long as we live here. They’ve been up since before we moved in 40 years ago, so …
I suspect that getting the job done is part of why he wanted to put off going out to the cottage until tomorrow.
We just got home from the lake at our corner…neighbor’s annual Oktoberfest was down there. It was fabulous, and so much fun. And, of course, terrific food!
Tomorrow…a relaxing day. Then Monday, our neighborhood annual Labor Day brunch which promises to also be fabulous.
Tomorrow I am going to free buffet/bbq cookout/all-day happy hour at a bar called Soccer Tavern. It was established a zillion years ago by Norwegian merchant seamen. Now it’s at one edge of Latinx/Chinese Sunset Park, with Bay Ridge, my neighborhood, huge Muslim population, and Boro Park which is Hasidic, a few blocks away. Of course Muslims don’t partake of alcohol and Hasidim only go to Kosher places. The big screen tvs show horse races and there’s always someone taking bets at a table. Great food, very mixed (in every way except no kids) crowd, good time. They do this for all the big holidays.
We are having a wonderful chill weekend!
The weather is glorious, the sun is shining and the birds are singing!
I’ve gone on a nice long walk every day. My husband has pattered in his gardens. We’ve been to Home Depot a couple of times.
Had BLT’s for dinner. Gone out for ice cream.
My husband hasn’t mentioned going to his brother’s house at all. I think he forgot he said he would think about going (which meant no I guess) and hasn’t given it another thought. I’m so thankful to enjoy the very best at home holiday weekend!
Years ago we decided to spend Labor Day weekend adding drywall over the three studded walls of our to our garage (the builder had finished only the one required wall, shared with the house interior). And paint. We joked that it would take 5 trips to Home Depot. In the end it was 7 trips, good that it’s only a few miles from home.
It started Thursday when my husband got the electrical stuff for adding outlets. There were other trips for drywall (I had to drive the minivan since the seat was too far forward for tall husband), primer, deferred trip for paint due to color indecision. And other various purchases. Admittedly we liked the fact that we could get a hot dog lunch from the food cart out front.
The cool thing about teaching kids to paint in a garage is that it’s not tragedy if not perfect. We picked a very light blue color, used on walls and ceiling to simplify things. Tis a fun memory thinking back on it ![]()
Quite the excitement on our cottage lake this weekend, but not the good kind. After dark on Friday, a tritoon ran over a pontoon. The young people on the pontoon had the clearheadedness to get out of the way … the tritoon plowed right over the seats that they had been sitting in. The pontoon is totaled and the young folks are shaken, bruised and scratched … but they are otherwise okay. The tritoon and its occupants are fine. There is a lot more to the story that I won’t share. I’m just glad the young people, whose parents we have known for decades, were spared a much worse fate.
Never heard of a tritoon but understand it now. That sounds terrifying and wow they are lucky to only have minor injuries.
Tritoons are/can be VERY powerful/fast. This one was a couple hundred thousand dollars (someone said $250,000).
