It’s a late Labor Day weekend! But guess what, it’s still summer and I’ll treat it like summer for the next 3 weeks.
Any holiday weekend company, events, traveling, or planned food to enjoy or share with others??
No big plans here. D1/H will stop shortly on Sunday from their vacation and pick up their dog. I might make an eggplant lasagna recipe for them - her H is a vegetarian and I have a spare eggplant. This recipe calls for both roasted eggplant AND lasagna noodles.
I have a couple ripe peaches so might make a small peach crisp or cobbler. H won’t eat it so will make it small cause all those calories will come my way!
If the weather improves, S and DIL may come and sun/swim. I hope to do the same if the rain/clouds stop and the temp moderates!
Normally I would grill, but this summer has been rough for grilling in Iowa – it’s either been raining or uncomfortably hot and humid. Maybe I’ll use the Grill setting on the air fryer.
Regardless it’ll be burgers, brats, mac salad, beans. I don’t even try making potato salad – mine falls so short of my mom’s that any attempt to duplicate or even approach it ends in abject disappointment. “I’ll get it right this time!” optimism turns into “What did I do wrong?!” lol
We are having friends over for a back yard picnic on Sunday. Nothing fancy - chips/dips, veggie and cheese tray, brats, kabobs, pasta salad, potato salad, cookies and cupcakes.
We actually did a family cookout last weekend with brats, polish sausage, potatoes on the grill. But I did buy some marinated pork carnitas (more like strips) that look like I could do them on the grill if the weather improves!
Neighborhood Oktoberfest on Saturday (I’m making fruit salad). Then a neighborhood Labor Day brunch on Monday. I’m making that grandmas potato dish with the hash Browns, cream of something soup, and I don’t remember what else. I need to find my recipe.
Weather is supposed to be cooler but nice. And we all have fleece jackets we can wear!
We were out of town last weekend so I’m hoping for a chill weekend.
My bil called last night at 8:50 to invite us to his house for a cookout on Labor Day. I do not want to go for many reasons. It’s 2 hours away, when we went on the 4th of July, he didn’t want us to be there until 5:30 pm and we left at 7 to drive the 2 hours home. We saw my mil on Monday on our way home from our son’s. H said it was good to visit then so we didn’t have to drive there and back in one day.
The traffic will be horrible. I don’t want to make food to take to a cookout. My mil is at odds with bil’s lady friend. I’d like to avoid that!
I just want to be home! I told my husband I didn’t want to go but he’s a huge obligation guy who thinks you should accept every invitation. He has a regular Monday golf game which I doubt is going to happen on a holiday. He told his brother that he would get back to him.
So I’m avoiding talking about it, and I’m positive he’s forgotten. Maybe if I don’t bring it up, he will forget!
Weather permitting (there are storms out in the Pacific that may or may not bring rain to southern coastal California), we’re having the neighbors across the street over for swimming and cookout. I won’t swim since still wearing that heart monitor. We’re planning beef and lamb sliders, corn on the cob, homemade lemon potato salad, and various hard fruit ciders. Neibghbors are bringing an unknown side and dessert. Not much prep needed except getting rid of all the spider webs on various parts of the outside.
Husband will work with a carpenter to replace the fence boards around the pool equipment area.
I will continue to do PT for my foot and undoubtedly spend a great deal of time consulting with son on setting up his new space. And think of things I can maybe send him.
We are going to a neighborhood party this evening. The theme is “Costco”, where everyone brings a costco item. I’ll be bringing some heat and eat veggie spring rolls.
Tomorrow we are going to a cookout pool party. We are bringing a pie.
One more invitation for Sunday (coworker of H’s house, 1.5 hours away)…I’m not too excited to go, kind of hoping H decides he doesn’t want to make the trip. If we don’t go there, we will probably plan a biking adventure for the day, culminating in dinner out somewhere.
Finally home for dinner on Monday, thinking turkey burgers on the grill, corn on the cob and tomato salad.
A neighbor we talked to this morning surprised us by mentioning that Monday is Labor Day already. But for that comment and now this thread, it would have passed us by. Obviously, we have no plans, but all of creameries around us close the day after Labor Day, so I suppose we’ll have to fit in that one last trip which is totally outside my pre-HS-reunion diet. Oh well. Ice cream.
Tomorrow we are meeting all the kids in Roanoke and then heading to Blacksburg for the VT game. I got us an Airbnb. It’s a night game, and this old lady doesn’t want to be driving tired at 1-2am anymore, plus the kids would need to stay somewhere. Hotels are about $300/room for a fleabag hotel (times 2-3 rooms), and this airbnb looked nice for $200/3BR. It is normally a 45 min drive, so still a little bit of a hike in traffic, but better than going all the way (3+ hours with traffic) home. Looking forward to seeing the kids. Looking forward to the game itself. Not looking forward to traffic and crowds. We will all go home Sunday.
Monday - H has to work 4:30am-12:30pm. I’ll go in with him to workout, and then back home to bed. Bonus of Monday being a holiday, the gym closes at 1 => he also has to open 4:30am on Tuesday. (sarcasm) At least he’ll make time and a half on his minimum wage…

Thanks to you @ChoatieMom I just asked H to see if Walgreen’s has any small vanilla good brand ice cream. We may need to add on a local ice cream trip as well!
Everyone’s food is gourmet, compared to what we will be eating. Our church picnic always has the same food; hot dogs, chips, veggie platters, cookies, and snow cones. It makes me think of that University of Michigan study concluding you lose 36 minutes of your life for every hot dog you eat.
We are invited to our good friends house and they are doing steak and lobster on the barbecue. I am bringing a salad, dessert and a bottle of wine. Otherwise H and I are having a quiet weekend.
I made reservations at our favorite winery restaurant for lunch tomorrow. We decided against driving over the mountains because my husband hurt his knee and is still recovering. So local dining and wine tasting it is!
