So the first class I’m going to be taking at UW is Chem 142 and I am wondering what the labs are like at UW. What exactly do we do in the 3hrs we are there? Is it difficult or straightforward? Do I need to prepare beforehand (read lab assignments before the class)? Are we generally working in teams, pairs, or alone? Basically anyone with experience please help me out…

Thanks.

I’ll be a newbie to labs as well (Chem 142 B!).

From what I’ve learned from upperclassmen, you have prelab assignments where you prepare for the lab beforehand and learn what you’re going to do. You work in pairs since there isn’t enough ‘material’/supply for each individual person. You’re not supposed to have the exact same lab write up, but you and your partner should have the same data.

Okay thanks. So are there only four labs in a quarter and roughly how long does it take to complete each lab?

How long the labs take will vary from day to day and from partners to partners. Some days you will be there all three hours and others you may be done in 90 minutes. It really depends and you won’t really know until you arrive on lab day, so don’t go in expecting to get out early. If you do not finish within the three hours though (it can happen, especially if something goes wrong and you have to redo things), you typically will not be allowed any additional time to complete the lab.

Wait my schedule says that I’m in CHEM 142 BG Quiz Section and CHEM 142 B Lecture, does that mean I’m in B Lab?
