labtop v PC for english major?

title says it all
afraid that labtop might get jacked
afraid that not having a labtop will be very inconvenient

any advice?

You’re laptop won’t get stolen unless you’re irresponsible with it. If you take it to the library or other common area, don’t leave it sit on the table while you “go back an aisle to find a book” because someone can take your computer in the 30 seconds you’re gone. Lock your bedroom door, and ask your roommate to be the same. Having a laptop is super convenient and it’s what I recommend.

Get a laptop. The only major I could see benefiting from a desktop would be one that needed a ton of graphics power like video editing. Even then, there are laptops out there with the power, they’re just expensive.

i wont be irresponsible with it; im just slightly worried… im rooming with my friend, and i can trust her but yeah. how’s everyone experience with labtops? good? also i was thinking desktop = more better… becauses its harder to carry and steal off. ha. ha. o_O iare labtops convenient for lecture notes during clss?

It doesn’t matter. I really don’t use my laptop’s portability. A desktop would be cheaper.

Laptop - with a cable lock if you are worried about it taking a hike.

sorry pet peeve…it’s laptop not labtop…

Just curious, is English not your first language? You’ve said “labtop” and “more better”? Lose the better, it’s improper english. If you’re speaking like that and English is your native language, then it might be a good idea for you to consider a different major.

I know the way classes are taught vary from prof to prof and from school to school, but I have a laptop and it has never left my room. I too am an English major. I have a Dell and it’s great. It does all I need and it was much less expensive than a mac, and money was a concern when buying my laptop. Whatever you get, be sure you get more than Word. As an English major, you’ll use word a lot, but your gen ed classes may require you to do something in Powerpoint or Excel. And it’s possible that you may need Powerpoint for presentations in upper-level English classes.

lol frostburg2010, im not theenglish major. (my friend is, and she askedme to post/reply regarding this topic)

mhm wat about “laPtops” for engineering majors and/orpremed majors?

honestly i don’t think your major really plays into it THAT much.
it might affect you if your major requires a lot of computer work outside your room.
but really, personal preference takes all.
are you going to ALWAYS, 100%, do important work in your room?
because, seriously, there will be times you’ll want the portability.
…it’s a nice day and you want to write your essay outside.
…it’s a horrible day and your roommate’s being annoying and you want to go chill on your computer… somewhere else.
…you’re working on a group project and want to take your computer to your partners’ rooms.
…you want to go study in the library.

a laptop offers you so many more options. and if you’re not a serious gamer, there’s no need to get a desktop IMO. sure they don’t get stolen. most laptops won’t either if you keep them locked. theft hasn’t been too much of an issue here: i’ve heard of break-ins and thefts occuring over breaks, but if you keep an eye on your stuff it won’t walk away.

portability > chance of getting stolen. to me, at least.

Get a laptop, no question about it.

It’s no more likely to be stolen than your cell phone. As long as you don’t leave it lying around for someone to take, no one will. As for which major is right for a laptop; any. Laptops these days – as mentioned earlier – are just as capable as desktops.

Cheers,
Alex

You should get a laptop. If you’re worried about it getting stolen, get LoJack. You already pay Symantec $40 per year to make sure your computer doesn’t get viruses (referring to windows laptops) but yeah when you’re moving out of your room 3-4 times a year, you want something that you can just pack up and go.

^^^you shouldn’t be paying Symantec $40 a year FYI
AVG antivirus (free) works just as well.

Use the money for LoJack instead

get a laptop. i dont even see why ppl own desktops anymore unless you’re into gaming. if you’re worried about it getting stolen, buy a laptop lock.

and the dude above is right. download AVG for the best free virus protection you can get. dont waste ur money on that Symantec crap. buy a cooling pad instead.
