LAC & Art School Partnerships

I’m looking for university & art school partnerships (dual degree programs) where the art school has a ranked film production. Brown & RISD have one of these partnerships. RISD film program is highly regarded.

I’m hoping to find alternatives for S19, because the ubiquitous film schools that meet full need are high reaches. LAC’s (with these partnerships) may have higher acceptance rates for low-income (0 EFC), semi-high achieving applicants - and still have access to quality film/tv programs via art school partnerships.

This is for film/tv prod, not studies.

It’s not a dual degree program (I really don’t know how many you’ll find), but I have a friend studying Film production at Champlain College where you can get a double major in a LA degree and an artsy type degree.

Thanks @pastelrain
The dual degree isn’t necessary. I’ll look into Champlain.

JHU and MICA have a partnership for film majors (not sure if it’s a dual degree). I’m not sure how the collaboration works, but the two institutions share a nice film production facility.

@romns116 I researched several dual degree and partnership programs when I was looking at both art programs and music programs for my daughters. While several of the programs seemed perfect, when we spoke to the schools and students directly and asked how many students participated and graduated with both degrees, we learned an entirely different story.

The overriding trend was while these programs sound good on paper, class scheduling and travel issues seem to make them near impossible to complete and the numbers of students participating were surprisingly low. So low that you don’t need more than a few fingers on one hand to count the graduates!

I would research them carefully and ask about all the logistics involved.

Tufts.

@uskoolfish you’ve confirmed my initial findings. Email conversations with each institution in the joint program leave me with more questions than answers. The questions that were answered tell me it would be the right fit for a number of reasons - including the ones you mentioned. Thank you!

Even so, higher level institutions with these joint ventures are still going to lack the breadth and depth a traditional film school would provide because that simply isn’t their target. Oh well.

@gardenstategal Tufts/SMFA was one of the first I looked at. It didn’t seem like it had a legitimate film production program. But I hear the partnership mentioned often. Did I miss it?

Actually, not sure about film, @romns116. Everyone I have known who has wanted film (an admittedly small universe) has gone to NYU or USC. But solely for film, not a joint degree.

SMFA is officially part of Tufts now, not a separate institution.

For LACs with their own solid film programs, look at Wesleyan and Colorado College.

I’ll look into CC. I think they’re a full needs met school also, that’s a plus. Thanks @doschicos

Also a “standalone,” Bard College has a well-regarded film department. http://film.bard.edu/ Not full-need, but I think they do pretty well with aid and are very holistic with admissions.

Thanks @KCHWriter
I’ve been looking at Bard’s film offering (again). Their film program seems more avant garde and experimentally focused. S19 is looking for feature film/TV series/Web series focus.
