Ladies - what's you facial regimen

I thought this was addresses w while back, but can’t find the thread.

In the past year, I’ve noticed those little lines appearing around my eyes and I’m thinking I might need to upgrade a bit of my facial regimen. I also have very dark circles under my eyes, but I get plenty of sleep.

I have somewhat fair, sensitive skin w lots of sun damage. (I see the dermatologist every 6 months and she freezes several spots on my forehead)

At night, I currently use some sort of clinique eye cream around my eyes (got in gift w purchase) and an aveno moisturizer. I put a bit of yellow a&d around my lips to keep them moist overnight. (part of this stems from grandfather who slathered Vaseline all over his face before bed and he had the smoothest skin you ever saw on a 90+ yo man).

In the morning, I apply more of the moisturizer wen I wash my fase and later, after the gym/shower. I typically don’t wear makeup during the day unless I have meetings. (I work from home on consulting projects)

I wander in the skin care aisle of CVS and wonder if the expensive serums and other things would be helpful.

What do you use?

I have friends who use creams that cost hundreds of dollars. I wash my face in the shower with clinique rinse off foaming cleanser and immediately getting out of the shower I use clinique moisturizer. At night I take my make up off with neutrogena make up removing towelettes. Just my opinion here and I’m sure the beauty industry disagrees - clean face, lots of water and a good nights rest are really as good as any fancy lotion. I also always use suntan lotion, always wear sunglasses outside, on vacation and boating I wear hats, sunglasses, suntan lotion, etc. I’m very fair, very sensitive to products. My mom at 80 barely has a wrinkle. She rarely ever work make up and would just slather on whatever my dad could get at the company store.

I rinse my face with a cleanser, then (only do this once a week) use a clarisonic to lightly exfoliate my face. After that i will go in with a toner just to get off any excess makeup or residue and clear my pores. After that i apply essense to my face, and then a target spot treatment for any acne or pimples (my skin is not acne prone) then put on an anti wrinkle eye cream and then a facial lotion to lock in moisture.

Since you see the dermatologist every 6 months, why not ask her for some recommendations? Maybe she could prescribe some retin A which is known to have anti aging effects. Some of the expensive serums at CVS may have retinoids (non prescription strength of retin A. If your moisturizer doesn’t have a sunscreen, you should probably find one that does.

Less is more. I rarely wear makeup, and when I do it is light. I wash my face in the shower every morning with Dove, or a similar gentle soap. I use daily moisturizer with at least SPF 15. I wear sunscreen with higher SPF when I know I’ll be out in the sun. I wash my face at night with a gentle cleanser and use a light moisturizer. That is a full summary of my facial regimen.

Most people think I am at least 10 years younger than I am.

More important an my daily facial regimen: I have good genes, I have never smoked, and lead a relatively stress free life. I get a reasonable amount of exercise, but I’m not out there killing myself. Most of what I eat is healthy. I am several years post menopausal, and am finding my metabolism is no longer as forgiving as it once was.

I would strongly recommend Retin A. Also, a good regimen such as Clinique or Bare Minerals. I think, to a certain extent, you get what you pay for. I draw the line at the REALLY pricey lines like La Mer and La Prairie. I like Origins, too, and the sales people at Origins are very helpful.

I used Clinique everything for many years, but I’m branching out. I purchased Philosophy Purity face wash on sale, and have been using it lately. I’ve been using Cerave AM and PM Moisturizers. They are very inexpensive. I still use Clinique eye cream. I’ve also started to use a retinoid cream each night. It came from the Drs office, but I was able to order it from Amazon without a prescription. I don’t wear much make-up, but use Clinique blush, eye pencil and mascara. I have a Bobbi Brown Lipstick I like. I think I have more wrinkles than others my age. My mother has TONS of wrinkles, but she’s a smoker and has had a harder life than I’ve had. I’m doing what I can, and plan to ask my dermatologist what else I can do to help, short of surgical procedures.

What does everyone think of facials?

“What does everyone think of facials?”

Facials feel absolutely wonderful, but I really don’t think they do much as far as wrinkles, if that’s the concern. I’ve tried a couple of things–microdermabrasion, which I thought was expensive, didn’t do much, and since I have thin skin, probably not the best thing for it. I have tried microcurrents, which seem to help the wrinkles more.

One thing that has really helped is a chemical peel. Now they have peels that are very mild, you barely flake, and they make your skin smooth, but it doesn’t help with wrinkles much. One that I’m trying to get the stamina to do again is something called a refine peel, from my spa. It is intense, and my skin will peel for two weeks following it. I can’t work for that time, and I have to hide my face just going into the grocery store, because people will stare at me like I have some awful disease. But…it is the only thing that actually has results.

I had blue light therapy 4 years ago at the dermatologist and the end result was great, but I would never do it again, as my face blew up so badly I needed a cortisone shot and had to stay in bed away from all light (including computer screen) for 2 days. After a few days of crazy peeling, my skin was as soft as a baby’s bottom.

I will call about RetinA.

I get facials on vacations. I always look fabulous afterwards. I do it about 2 - 3 times a year, unsure how often is really helpful.

My face routine is wash my face before I go to bed. Put on moisturizer, after washing and shower. Sunscreen too.
Face mask when I notice any flakiness. Drink more water than anything else. Be happy that even though my genetics for my insides could have been better, my outsides are good.

Every night I cleanse my face with Ponds wipes. I put Roc eye cream on my eye wrinkles. I use garnier deep wrinkle day cream under my Mary Kay foundation make up every day. And always, but always use sunscreen, at least 30 on my face.

What I’m really asking about facials for isn’t wrinkles; it’s blackheads and other assorted icky things. I’ve had one facial in my life and, while it was pleasant, it was expensive. I see some ladies with fabulous skin that looks porcelain smooth, and I wonder if they have frequent or regular facials during which the aesthetician removes those icky things.

Retin A all the way! (I use the generic though). I am blessed to have my Dad’s spanish skin. Until age 53, I had no visible wrinkles unless I smiled. People would ask me “how is it you have NO wrinkles?” A couple of years ago, I started seeing small ones by the outside corners of my eyes, my pores seemed large and my complexion just didn’t seem as fresh.

Went to my dermotologist and he recommended Retin A. It takes a couple of months for your skin to adapt, and for you to learn how much you can use while it’s adapting…but 2 years later and those faint wrinkles are GONE!. Pores have shrunk and my complexion looks great. About once a month it’s like your skin starts peeling and sloths…and what you get is baby fresh smooth skin. I love it when it does that…I feel like I glow!

I’ve started to get the lines on my chest now and started using it on my chest. It irritated it much more and made it itch like crazy, so I stopped. Then I started again only using it once a week to build up. It would itch during the week, but after a month stopped. My chest is almost wrinkle free now. That stuff is amazing.

I don’t wear makeup, only lip gloss. Being Black, we tend to wrinkle much later in life, thank goodness, because I have absolutely no regimen.

Gosh. I wash my face with soap in the shower. I put regular Jergens lotion on when it feels dry. I wear a cheap SPF 15 face lotion like Olay or Neutrogena when I’m outside a lot. I don’t wear makeup unless I’m going to a wedding or something. My skin is great and I have many fewer wrinkles than others my age. I read an article many years ago where Cybill Shepherd said her skin routine was just to use a nubby washcloth and basic soap. Her grandmother did that and looked fabulous. Then I started thinking, men don’t do anything special, and they mostly look great! So I combine that philosophy with never trying to tan, and it works for me. If I do get a bunch of wrinkles later on, I don’t care!!!

This is a timely thread. Last week, I cleaned out my makeup drawer and threw out all of my makeup and facial products in an effort to simplify. I’m in my early 50’s and use a mild cleanser, eye cream and moisturizer with collagen. My make up is a light liquid foundation by Bare Minerals. If I use more than one drop, I can feel it.

Sweating from working out and wearing makeup tend to clog my pores so I schedule facials once a month. I love them! I tend to need them more in the summer than in the winter.

Men do something that benefits them…they shave, which exfoliates their skin daily. I use the generic apricot scrub daily in the shower followed by retin A every other day. Use an eye cream and moisturizer daily, whatever brand is on sale. I can easily pass for 10 years younger than I am so I will keep up my regimen…

@lilmom, what makes you feel like you “need” a facial?
