Laid back LAC in NE

Dickinson will probably fit the bill and check most requirements. TE + location close enough to DC + their a bit international vibe and study abroad programs (they even have signs around campus in other languages - parking sign next to admission is in Russian (looking at your profile name)). School programs have DC connections. They also provide some merit.

We liked Skidmore when we visited (nice campus, cool town, great art programs), but it’s admission rate may be misleading for kids who apply RD and need financial aid. If you search around, you’ll find many high stats kids who were waitlisted in RD and needed FA, including my D24. I’m not trying to discourage you from applying or visiting, but I’d caution against categorizing Skidmore as a target or likely based on its numbers alone.

Of the schools that I’ve investigated that might meet your criteria, Wesleyan seems like a great fit. And, if she’s willing to go further west or even far west, I think Macalester and Scripps are real gems.

Yes, and Vassar doesn’t do merit aid so probably not a fair comparison.

Thanks for replying. IME, Oberlin offers merit to most strong applicants which would include students who are accepted to more selective schools like Vassar.

Macalester has the bonus of being one of the few private SLACs that offer EA and merit AFAIK.

I’m happy to hear this about Dickinson. We’re planning to visit during their junior open house event. We may detour through Juniata on the drive to see what it’s like as well. It’s a TE school the NPC results looked better than some similar schools too.

Clark has been mentioned a few times on this thread.

My S24 was at admitted students day a few weeks back. They gave him a tremendous merit package ($30k) and brought the cost way down. He absolutely loved the professors and feel. But he wanted a larger school (his High School has more students than Clark has undergrads). He was offered honors (it’s brand new). And they also have the 4+1 program with a free 5th year in about 10 programs (half off the others). The area right around the school is quiet - and a little ugly - aside from fast food but Worcester has several walkable areas a bus ride away downtown with restaurants, etc. just over an hour or so from Boston. Check it out.

Caution about Juniata.
It is very rural. However, that is not what stopped DD. She liked all but incoming students. She said they were not responsive and either artsy or sport people. Since she was neither, she did not feel that she could find her crowd there (even run Instagram for incoming freshman for Juniata) So she declared that she is not going to Juniata and found her crowd in 2 days on Instagram at Rhodes - 12 hours away from home (initially she wanted to stay close to home, but decided to accepted BS/DO with LECOM and had to chose between Juniata and Rhodes, the only LECOM feeders from her application list…)
BTW she hated Oberlin too…Too artsy…

Just a heads up on TE. I posted this in 2022, but it’s worth repeating here since you’re thinking about TE schools. Judging from the recent TE threads, each year seems to get a bit worse:
