Lake Tahoe Skiing- suggestions needed

Thanks everyone. Lots to think about.
Artlovers-
The place you recommended looks charming but the reviews are quite mixed. Can you comment on those reviews?

Yes, it is alarming. I was in the Central Valley over the holidays and have never seen it look like that…dry, brittle brown, almost barren when it should have been vibrant green.

Squaw Valley and Northstar both have “villages” which offer things to do when you are not skiing. In the summer we have gone to the Retro Skate Night at Northstar. The outdoor rollerrink is an ice rink in the winter. The rink is surrounded by firepits. I guess they hand out s’mores daily at 3pm.

btw - Skip the idea of staying in Reno or Carson City because they’re just cities - not scenic and in Reno’s case, not particularly nice. The places adjacent to Lake Tahoe is much nicer and scenic. If cost is an issue you can stay at one of the many motels on the California side of Stateline and choose according to your means but it sounds like you can probably manage a pretty decent place.

But if there’s no snow then it all may be moot. Don’t lose hope yet because a single storm can bring feet of snow but clearly it’s not a typical year for snowfall. It just needs to quit being summer in California.

actually, the weather in the Bay area has been a lot like the SCal desert in wintertime- clear sunny days and cold crisp nights. Its been really nice[ except we need the rain!!]

Where did you see the reviews? To stay in NT Hotels, this is the best bet other than stay at the property, on slope. There is a Best Western like up the road 10 miles from Squaw at the intersection of 80 and 89 we stayed there before, Clean but smaller Rooms, cost a little less, or you can stay in Trukee or Tahoe City hotels, they are all old and small hotels.

Other than that, you have to go for the condos.

What is your budget per night?

If you have Hilton points definately stay at the Embassy Suites. Next to the Marriott, all suites, free breakfast and evening cocktails. Within walking to Heavenly lifts.

ok, ok, Saw the comments on TripAdvisor. I don’t know about those negative reviews, but my friends like it. Its too rich for my blood, so I have never stayed there.

Regarding comments about Carson City, if you are in Tahoe every week and some times 10 days at a time, you really only need a bed to sleep on, those touristy stuff is not of our concerns. Believe me or not, I stayed everywhere in State Line before and we used to have a house behind the casinos in mid 80’s.

IMO, if you want to ski Heavenly, by all means go to stay at those large hotels/casinos there. But don’t tell me that skiing experience is no good (based on your skiing level). I am making the recommendation based on skiing point of view, not from accommodation point of view.

I forgot to answer this.

IMO, Kirkwood is worth every minute of driving and it is a diamond in the rough at Tahoe. It is second closest resort from the Bay Area(Bear Valley is number one), it has the BEST snow conditions and it has excellent terrain that you can ski the whole season and not get bored. I’d get bored easily at Heavenly and Northstar.

It’s good that you are getting lots of input!

If you are coming in February, I would imagine we will have snow by then. It’s hard to imagine we will still be dry a month from now.

As far as things to do other than skiing, you might want to try some winetasting. sounds like you have done Napa. I myself would skip Sonoma and go to Healdsburg area. I much prefer the wines there as well as the ambience. Great restaurants, shops, etc.

If you are coming up highway 50 to South Shore, you should consider some of the winery areas in El Dorado and Amador county. My personal preference is these areas for the scenery and the quality of the wines. if you want to pay a lot for tastings, go to Sonoma or Napa. If you want to talk to winemakers, go to Healdsburg, Amador, El Dorado. (I think the Russian River wine road barrel tasting is typically in Feb or March.)

Jym,

I think River Ranch is a moot issue. I input 2/18-24 in Expedia and its sold out.

Here is another one Granlibakken Resort
for $200/night. This was the ski jump site for the 1960 Olympics and epicski use the facility for their gathering.

Drought has happened in Tahoe before, but this year is the worst for Dec. ~ Jan.

Here is a NYTime report:

Last year was a banner year so was 2004, I was skiing the day before Halloween.

Here is a photo I took on Halloween 2004

WARNING - Don’t go to the site linked above - my browser (Chrome) says it contains malware

GGDad, It is my own site, I did not upload any “wares”… my own photos as well.

Squaw valley was very nice. I recommend staying in a hotel in Tahoe itself because from there you can explore multiple resorts (north and squaw valley included).

Oh and I would go to New Mexico this year. They have fantastic snow! The best in ten years in fact! We went two weeks ago so I don’t know if it’s still there this year…

artlovers,
The reviews I was reading are on the link you posted in post # 36. When you open the link ther are 7 reviews.

I’m sure you didn’t do anything malicious but nevertheless Chrome reports it as a site that contains malware. If you’re hosting it you might want to check on it but posters shouldn’t open the link given that it’s detected by Chrome to have malware. The problem with malware is that it installs without the user realizing they’re installing it.

jym,

ok, so don’t go to river ranch… as I said it is a moot issue, they are booked. my friend went and was raving about.

Has anyone else detected a malware on my site as well? I have anti virus on my sites which is hosted by a third party. please let me know and I will email admin. My norton did not find any malware.
