Lake Tahoe Skiing- suggestions needed

That’s reminding me of the time my D took a friend, friend fractured her wrist, and we got caught in a storm on the way back. Roads closed, and we all sat in our car on the side of the mountain…good tines…

Ouch!

BTW, had been narrowing in on N Tahoe and Squaw before xiggi suggested it. Now am having trouble finding lodging, with many places on VBRO wanting me to change my arrival dates to meet their availability. Um, no.
Any recommendations? Craigslist wasn’t too useful either :(

From yesterday’s NYT - alternates to VRBO.

Perfect! Thanks parent1986! I am also looking into places that were recommended by limabeans and others earlier in this thread. Appreciate the help.

jym, if you are planning to ski Squaw, don’t stay in South Tahoe, the better choice is Reno for sure. The driving from S to N is going to kill the deal as noted before. Either way, you are going to hit traffic in the afternoon, but the drive from Reno is much pleasant in the morning. Our strategies are go early(7:00~7:30 with stop for breakfast) and leave early(~3:00) to avoid all the traffic. Or in the afternoon, you can take your time and leave around 5.

Of course, if you do not care for driving, stay in Squaw.

Jym, finally I can say something useful!

Have you looked at :

[Lake Tahoe Vacation Rental Homes & Tahoe Rental Cabins](http://www.tahoeaccommodations.com/)

They have helped us a couple of times and we ALMOST ALWAYS stay in North Tahoe. When we were poor-er, we stayed in Crystal Bay and then drove to both Northstar and Alpine. Now we more often stay near Northstar and just ski there.

Doing snow dance and we’ll have a ski report (Probably Heavenly) the week before you go.

Thanks again, helpful cc’ers!!

Well, just as I think I’ve narrowed it to Squaw, my DH says we could reconsider using his hotel points at the Embassy suites at heavenly!! So I will look at both… again. I am afraid I’ll run out of time an options :(

If we stay in N Tahoe we will probably ski there, and ditto if we stay in S Tahoe we will ski there. Probably not worth running around too much.

Try these Hilton hotels, one is at Truckee.

You might want to consider going to the opposite location at least one day since the drive is a scenic drive you might enjoy even if you weren’t skiing as a destination but you could decide this after you get there unless you pre-purchase lift tickets (3 or 5 day pass at a single resort or something) that’d preclude you from doing so.

^^ East side highway is not that scenic and the west side may be closed, as noted before… regarding lake view from the slopes, Homewood has a better view than Heavenly.

It’s raining! Well, just a little…and it’s REALLY cold! well, 47, at about 800 feet elevation.

I have had good luck renting through vacationrentals.com for other locations.

jym- I think one problem for you is that you want to go President’s weekend. If it was a random winter week or weekend it is easy enough to wait till the last minute if you aren’t picky. My H and kids love to snowboard at Mammoth. They have a condo complex they like that is at the slopes. They aren’t picky about what unit so wait till two or three days before going and book at the last minute discount. That way they also don’t get stuck with reservations they can’t fully cancel if the conditions aren’t great. Also I think many northern ca school districts give a ski week which is around President’s Day. I know my sister has started heading to Mammoth for ski week since Tahoe is alway packed.
I don’t enjoy skiing or boarding but love when the rest of the family goes and I get the house to myself. My H and D are depressed that they have not had any mountain time yet this season. They were orginally going this week but decided against it since the conditions aren’t great.

"Also I think many northern ca school districts give a ski week which is around President’s Day. "

Wow! Ive never heard of that!

^ really? Our kids always had ski week off. This year it’s February 20 - 24.

No rain here in the South Bay…but very dark.

We always check out the webcams before we leave the Bay Area for Tahoe:

[Caltrans District 3 Traffic Camera Map](Content Not Available | Caltrans)

Also go to the CA Road Conditions link on the same site and enter 80 or 50, depending on whether you’re going north or south, for any highway closures, chain control info, and accident reports.

I think we may have a condo!! Will finalize tonight. Any discount lift tickets?

^" really? Our kids always had ski week off. This year it’s February 20 - 24."

I looked up the local school calender, and did see that week listed as “winter break”. Hmmm… I don’t remember my kids having that, but i remember some week long breaks starting a year or so ago. I was under the impression it was a cost saving move. I guess we don’t have as many skiers around here.

I live in Southern California and we are one of the few school districts in Southern California that have it. We have heard it is much more popular in Northern California. Officially, in our district, it is called “Presidents Week” (because it combines President’s day and Lincoln’s birthday), but everyone refers to it as “ski week”. We generally go to Mammoth and the kids always see tons of friends from school.

Most schools in CT used to have the presidents day week off. Most now
Have a four day weekend. This year, thanks to hurricane Irene and/or the snow storm in October, most are having presidents day only off.

Oh! Good jym! For lift tickets, did you try online? AAA? They often have them at grocery stores and gas stations ( Shell) around here.
