Language question

My son has had 5 years of German, starting in 7th through Junior year. He wants to skip German his senior year to add an AP course in Economics or AP gov / pol.

Will not having 4 years of a language in HS hurt him with a selective school, such as Boston College ( his first choice)?

His average 3.5 with honors and AP courses and his ACT was 34 (writing score of 9).

Thanks for your insight.

Colleges want proficiency normally attained thru 4 yrs in HS. The fact your son finished early is no detriment.

If the 5 years got him to at least level 4 of HS German, he’s covered. His ACT score is great, but the GPA is a bit iffy. If the GPA still puts him in the top 10% of his class, he should be fine. Good luck,

3.5 seems a little bit low for BC

Did your son take the German AP test? If he hasn’t taken the AP German test, he should continue with FL, as many college’s exempt a student from their foreign language graduation requirement, or award advanced credit if they have taken the AP foreign language test and scored a 3, 4 or 5. For example, at BC: http://www.bc.edu/admission/undergrad/process/advstanding.html#AP</a>
