What are you guys getting? what model to be more specific? I don’t even know whether I should go for Apple or IBM computer.

I have had my 12" IBook for almost a year now. And I LOVE it. I’ve used PCs all my life, and then had a lot of exposure to the joys of Macs on the yearbook staff. Needless to say, I have changed and never looked back.

I should say however, I am very biased. My PC was taken over by spyware and I have not turned it on for several months. I’m going to take the leap and turn it on to recover some of my stuff…but it barely runs. It wouldn’t even stay on long enough to run and Ad Aware program.

I got a Dell Latitude, one of those packages that the school recommends.

I have an IBM

That is not a valid bias;)

Every Windows user is vulnerable to spyware and viruses; this constitutes one of the incentives for switching to a Macintosh: the platform is much more secure.

This is not only because it is less popular, but it is also because the casual user never has full administrative access to his/her Mac, and therefore, any virus or spyware that is inadvertently downloaded, and compatible with the Mac, cannot affect system files.

what about the TOSHIBA???
is it any good?

I know a lot of people with Toshibas, I myself have an apple, and they really like it, it’s still not immune to the viruses and spyware that fly through college networks though

A tangentially related question: when Windows XP Professional is listed as a minimum requirement on Hoya Computing website does that mean XP Home is not good enough?

I’m bringing my dad’s old IBM labtop. He bought it like 4 years ago, I don’t know what model it is. I was going to get a new one but decided not to waste the money when I don’t do much with computers besides typing up papers and going online anyway.

just ordered a dell inspiron 6000. got a great deal, basically 500 dollars cheaper than from anywhere else

i was also debating paying extra for xp pro but i talked to my techie friends and they said it was completely unnecessary for the average student, so i just got xp home

I just received the new XPS M1210. And in my opinion it is the best laptop that a student can buy. It has the power of a desktop replacement while maintaining a portable build. While it is a little heavy for a 12.1 inch laptop, you cannot beat it in terms of functionality.

For my self, one of the best features would have to be the integrated web cam (it rotates). I use this to record my lectures so that I can pay full attention to the details (I often write my notes immediately after class).

Hope this helps.
