Laptop Advice!

Hi all!

So I come from a strictly mac family, but now that I’m going to college in a few months, I’m trying to broaden my horizons.
I’m really interested in the Lenovo Yoga 2-in-1 Laptop (13 inch) but my folks are pushing me to get a macbook, despite the fact it’s more expensive. I’m going to be a history major, so papers & research are going to be a big deal. What do you recommend? Do I need a macbook?

Either computer would be fine for papers and research. You pretty much just need a computer with a word processor to write papers. You don’t need a macbook. No one needs a macbook.

That being said, if your parents are willing to pay for the macbook and you are comfortable with that operating system, then there’s no reason you have to get a PC. It really doesn’t matter, to be honest. Get the computer you can afford. If you’re just using it for word processing and internet, pretty much any modern computer will do. Getting something on the lighter side with a longer battery life can be helpful. I would recommend you get Microsoft Office, regardless of if you get a Mac or a PC, because it’s the standard for schools and workplaces.

Key is lightness, good keyboard, internet access wirelessly, back up usb & dvds, a 4 in 1 printer. Microsoft student pak includes Word, PPT, & Excel. Excel helps you graph. PPT is good for class presentations. Word allows English grammar stuff, painting, drawing, font changing, page layout. 4 in 1 printer allows ease of printing plus Xerox & scan. If pressed for time you can fax homework in as well. Advanced software includes CorelDraw, Adobe, Photoshop.

I have a Lenovo Yoga. It’s cute, but we have a love/hate relationship. I will never forgive myself for getting a computer that has no disk drive. Also, I almost never use it as a tablet. For me, it just isn’t very user friendly that way. When ever you watch videos, for some reason, it is much slower in tablet form. But if you are only concerned about typing papers and researching, either should do. Lenovo sucks for playing music though. The max volume on the Yoga is probably 1/2 as high as a macbook

You may want to consider the new Dell XPS 13.
