im looking to buy a laptop somewhat soon, does MIT offer some sort of discount? i cant really find anything online but i remember reading something about it. also any recommendations are welcome for an engineering student who doesn’t like macs

The IST webpage with purchasing information is here: [Software and Hardware Purchasing at MIT | IS&T](http://ist.mit.edu/services/purchasing)

It requires certificates.

when do we get the certificates? after enrolling? or when classes actually start?

Oh. Sorry. Forgot that you guys don’t even know how to get certificates yet.

After May 1, if you’ve told MIT that you’re coming in the fall, you’ll get what’s called the Next Big Mailing, which contains a lot of information about various things at MIT, including information on how to pick an MIT username. Once you have a username, you can get certificates from MIT that will identify you as an MIT student to MIT websites. This usually gets sent out in late May – maybe early June.

is the Next Big Mailing cooler than the tube?

Well, not visually – it’s just an envelope. But quite exciting in terms of contents. :)
