Laptop for a history major?

I’m lookin for a laptop for college and one that would have a lot of memory for all the assignments I see in the future. Lookin to pay NO MORE than $1,000 unless necessary.

Are you serious, or joking? A $300 laptop, or even a 5 year+ old one will fit all of the needs of a History major.

Actually, unless the laptop concerned can run Windows 7 well at the very minimum…a 5+ year old laptop is out as Microsoft will stop all support for XP in 2014. I’d also strongly recommend against running Vista unless you enjoy torturing yourself.

Agree that a less expensive laptop is fine. You won’t be running any complex programs that require the highest levels of sophistication. You’ll have plenty of memory for all that schoolwork. You could even write a book and still have space left over.
However, most colleges expect you to run their network software (to connect you to the school’s network) plus the security program they endorse- and yours has to be capable of running those programs. It’s really a no-brainer, as most new models have this capacity. Look at the school’s IT pages or call and ask about minimum specifications. Agree not to bother with Vista, just get windows 7. Many schools have a link to purchase that at a discount. And, get a thumb drive and use it.

Get the cheapest thing out there that is at least i5. And get a windows for compatibility.
