Laptop Recommendations for a Physics Undergrad

I’m trying to decide on which laptop/group of devices I should get with a 2500 tech scholarship. I am mainly deciding between if I want a 2in1 laptop or both a seperate laptop and tablet, and whether I should get MacOS or Windows. Does anyone have any recommendations??

If by tablet you mean a device like an iPad rather than a dedicated drawing tablet, I would lean to getting a single device - maybe it’s just me, but I feel like having two devices would mean you either end up working on your tablet due to all your notes being there, or you lug your laptop to class.

I’m more familiar with Windows so I would get an LG gram pro 16 or ThinkPad X1 or Samsung pro book 6 or similar, but if you’re into the Apple ecosystem you could get the MacBook air (at least 1tb SSD, 70W charger) + (wacom drawing tablet or cheap/used iPad).

Unless you learn LaTeX, you will be writing a lot of handwritten math notes as a physics major, and even if you do learn LaTeX, solving a problem by hand will be easier.

If you have enough money leftover, you could get a color e-ink reader for reading textbooks: Guoyue K3 Color -- 10.3 inch Kaleido 3 Color E-ink display – Bigme Official Store

Can your scholarship be put towards used products, or only new ones?

My engineering daughter had a 2 in 1 with a stylus so she could take hand written notes on the device. She loved it.

Check with your department about the operating system question.

My physics/math major uses an Ipad for classwork, doing problem sets, etc and a windows based computer that he also has linux on for programming and more complex stuff, he says it works well

Windows computer Lenovo carbon X1. Have at least or more then 16 g ram. Very light weight computer. Go to their site since I think they have student deals. They also have 2/1 type computers. It’s a business computer and lasts and last. Check with your college but these days it usually doesn’t matter much. You will need a good ability to process information and this computer will do it with ease.
