Is laptop theft, or any other forms of theft, a prevalent issue on the Cornell campus? Here in Vancouver, Canada, this is a huge problem in a local community college besides my HS.

Tons of people have laptops here and I’ve never heard of a laptop theft. There’s a big police unit for that sort’ve stuff here but I’ve never been there.

you can check out the campus police website for types of crimes reported…

most common sense is to buy a laptop lock and take it with you wherever you go…

most of the thefts occur at the library or in public spots (not in your dorm)

laptops, electronic accessories, wallets and purses are commonly stolen items

Although I haven’t heard of any problems among my friends, the libraries always have signs that say “Don’t leave your valuables alone”, especially during finals. Its definitely not something to worry about – and I sometimes leave my computer to go to a caf

it’s happened, but it doesn’t happen that often. i overheard the people in mattin’s cafe in duffield saying a girl left her laptop out and went to the bathroom, but when she got back it was gone. But people leave their laptops out for much longer (hours sometimes) and nothing happens.

We had a few issues with laptop theft when I worked in Uris. It’s not common, but it does happen. Just use common sense.

If you don’t leave your laptop unattended, you will have nothing to worry about.
