Laptop under $500

Can I get one?

Um I highly doubt it. Even a low-end Dell would cost you $599 or more. And those are NOT recommended if you want it to last more than 18 months.

I thought I could fetch an ACER in that price.

oh wow – really? I was under the impression that acers were uber expensive. haha, I guess maybe not.

Noooooo, Acers are mad cheap:) I bought one in '95, and yes back then as were all desktop computers, my system was super expensive, near 2K. I don’t know now but I have heard that Acers really suck and their performance is quite bad as well, therefore their cheap and crappy. But I’ll take one for $500, plus I’ll need it for two years. As long as I can browse the internet, and write essays I’m fine.

Acer quality sucks really bad. I had one for 40 miserable months and I had to get a new screen twice, have the hard drive replaced 8-9 times and have windows reinstalled like a dozen times (I guess the last one’s a microsoft problem) but anyway when my screen broke OFF the computer (like physically fell OFF of the main part) I had enough and bought myself a macbook pro. Should have gotten a mac 4 years ago, but my mom didn’t do any research into laptops and just got me the one that the school “recommended.” Except even THEY use dells now.

yea dude save up at least for a dell

haha. all i know is that my friend has one he uses for warcraft, and yeah.

LOL I’m using windows 98 SE right now hehehehe OLD SCHOOL heck yes. And yes by SE I mean second edition if that adds any value.

Um…if you want a refurbished, celeron, 40gig, cd-rom…yea you can get one?

I saw some at Wal-Mart from $488 to $540.

Oh yeah, they were Acers, too.

there aren’t GOOD laptops for under 500 (unless you get a ton of discounts and rebates). I don’t see why would a student want to be cheap when it comes to somtehing like this.

As far as quality goes I strongly recommend you put together your own: ASUS barebones/whitebooks are the best IMO. and if you take good care of it (don’t take it for a swim or set it on fire) it will outlast few Dells or Toshibas.

But if for some reason you can’t squeez out 800-1300 $ and you need something RIGHT NOW check out uuBid they have refurbished and used laptops for good prices.

…not a good idea, at all. Try saving up for a desktop at around $700. At least that’ll give you some longevity.

Actually, it is possible.

If you buy during the back-2-school season and when there’s the tax-free weekend, then you can buy a Compaq Presario for under $300.

I saw one.

I had an Acer up until yesterday, and yes the the screen hinge broke and it was not even 2 years old. Same thing with a friend of mine’s too…went Dell this time:) plus warrranty!

check out best buy…i got a toshiba last fall for 499 and it came with a free printer.
