<p>Hi, I was wondering if I could get by in NYU MAP and Stern classes with a laptop with broken USB ports (long story) and Windows Vista OS? Could anyone shed some insight onto this matter?</p>

<p>The practical side of me wants to say that you should get any computer repairs fixed BEFORE you leave for college, Stern or not.</p>

<p>Just don’t freak out when your computer inevitably breaks during midterm week/finals week. That’s when all computers seem to freak out. I would still recommend getting it looked at before you come to NY, because I guarantee that getting it fixed at NYU will be WAY MORE expensive than just getting it fixed now.</p>
<p>dreamormoney, you can go to the NYU computerstore and get a computer and any hardware, software and accessories, and defer the payments over 4 semesters, interest free. It will appear on your bursar bill in 4 installments. We did this for D and we finished paying for it this past semester. You can go to the website and check out the deferred payment option.</p>
<p>it’s really a perfectly fine laptop other than the fact that the usb ports don’t work, so unless for some reason NYU just fries laptops it shouldnt just spontaneously break down on me during midterms lol</p>
<p>The broken USB ports could definitely be problematic at some point, but I’m sure there will be ways to work around it.</p>

<p>All of the USB ports except for one on my laptop are broken too. I just have a little USB hub that I use whenever I need.</p>
<p>A number 2 pencil and a pad of paper will work fine too.</p>
<p>Well, vista is slow and creaky. You may start to get annoyed after a while at how much it clogs up. Updating to 7 should make your computer go faster and smoother. If you don’t want to spend money on the upgrade, you could try linux (ubuntu lets you dual boot it without any problems, so if you don’t like it you can always go back).
But if you are able to use it now without any problems to do school work, then that shouldn’t change over 4 years, so you’ll be fine.</p>

but no windows 7 is not necessary - the laptops that you can borrow and the computers that you can use at stern only run on like xp business or something…
but you should look into fixing usb ports just because usb ports are useful</p>
