Laptops at Cal Poly SLO

How common are Lap tops at Cal Poly SLO? how often are they stolen? What are the advantages/disadvanteges of having one? would you recommend a laptop or regular computer overall for college?

i’d recommend lappy…regular computers are big and not mobile. Only advantage to a reg. comp is that they’re much more powerful. Even the most powerful desktop replacement laptop is nothing compared to a good desktop. I’d get the best desktop notebook out there, though. Since it’s a tech school…you’ll probably want your laptop to be able to connect somewhere else to do some sort of lab work or something, then you may also want it to type notes in class (only problem is that it’s not freestyle like handwriting where you can do stuff like math/physics --where you need to make lots of assorted shapes and symbols easily). Then, if your dad works at a large company, chances are, they’ll have something called “STOP” (Security tracking of office property). Very useful thing, they affix a plate to the laptop and if someone steals it, the cops will put out an APB on the laptop, if they find it somewhere, they’ll notify you and bring it back. I’d also look into getting some sort of insurance for it. Also, backup your stuff regularly, so if it ever does become stolen, you don’t lose much. The plate requires something like 800 pounds of force to remove and leaves a permanent marking. If the person wanted to take it off, chances are strong they’ll break the laptop before the plate comes off.
