Will the laptops you buy through MIT have Vista on them?

No, I do not believe so.

That being said, Vista is free to download and use with your MIT certificates, so if you want to, you can use it.

If a student is buying a new Windows laptop, should they also buy virus protection software, or is that something that can be downloaded from MIT? If so, is there a charge for it?

good 'ole McAfee Virus-scan. only let me down once -_^

and MIT does not currently recommend upgrading to Vista. and neither do my friends.

then again, a good part of MIT would probably recommend that you “upgrade” to Linux. depends on your needs

And just to clarify, incoming students can download virus protection free from MIT as soon as they have certificates – so if you have them, you can download it now.

MIT has a sitewide license for both Vista and XP, so you can switch to whichever one you are happiest with, anyway.

AVG for the win.

Hi there… I work at IS&T, and we don’t recommend upgrading to Vista yet.
http://web.mit.edu/ist/news/headlines/vistawait.html

The models of PC laptops that we offer student discounts for are all able to be purchased with Windows XP instead of Vista. In the next couple weeks we will be releasing new recommendations for the updated Latitude models of Dell machines, as well as new Thinkpad models from Lenovo, so keep that in mind, especially if you are in the Class of 2011.

If you are out purchasing on your own, you might run into some issues with not being able to select Windows XP as an option, however it’s definitely not the end of the world if you go with Vista. The reason why we don’t recommend it yet is that we’re still training and upgrading our own equipment, and so until that process is complete we can’t offer 100% full support to students. Our consultants, though, will give a ‘best-effort support’ to those who call in with Vista questions, though we can’t guarantee that we can give a quick answer and resolve the problem.
