What is the best strategy for purchasing a laptop for my freshman year. Should I buy one at home or on campus or in the LA area? Does UCLA offer service agreements in case you have problems with your laptop?

I would buy it before you get to school so that you can check it out, see what software you need to install and make sure there are no problems before your classes start. I don’t go to UCLA but generally, colleges offer IT services to their students. But when I bought my computer back in the day, I also got a service plan from the store.

Yea, I would buy one before you get to college, so you can get use to it. A lot of companies (Apple, HP, etc) usually offer Back-to-school discounts, so take advantage of that.
Near UCLA, the only place to buy a new laptop is probably at the UCLA store, so your options/choices are somewhat more limited. of course you can always buy it online and have it shipped to UCLA.
