Large private schools in Tri- state area of New York

SUNY Stony Brook also added a journalism school, and it looks to me as if the school is putting money behind it:

I second Fordham Rose Hill in the Bronx. Nice campus, communications major available, and van service to the other campus at Lincoln Center.

If she has a B- average and 1080-1100 on old SAT, she should look at Drew, Fordham, Hofstra.

Thanks to all that made suggestions…CC is an excellent reosurce for anyone that is going down the college search road.

My niece will be attending West Conn- Two NY state universties rejected her app. They claim they have been swamped with apps in the last 3 years and are more selective now…hmmmm I guess the Private LAC’s are getting too expensive for some?

I’m wondering why he thinks that with a B average, she would be better off at a private than at a SUNY. I could think of several SUNYs where she would get an excellent education.

I saw some good suggestions, but did not see Marist on the list. It’s a little easier than some to get into yet has some good programs. Good luck to your niece!

Drew University in Madison, NJ. great school!

Marist is definitely a good choice if she could get in. A bit farther up the Hudson River is Union College, near Albany.

Also have her look into Mount Saint Mary in Newburgh. It’s not big (under 2,000), but the school has been steadily improving, it’s in a lovely location an hour and a half north of NYC and it has a big co-op program. Also has communications department.

I suggest Seton Hall, Rider, Monmouth, Wagner (in NYC), and Hofstra. SUNYs are a crapshoot nowadays for average kids and Marist and Fordham might be reachy, depending upon the whole application. St. John’s would be an option as well.

I think Fairfield U would be a big reach nowadays.

what about NYU?

The op started this thread last fall and then bumped it up to let everyone know that, “My niece will be attending West Conn”

I’m guessing that he doesn’t need any more suggestions.

Teacher was finally fired! it seems he communicated with well over 100 girls via text and e-mail. Parents never knew. One girl had a nervous breakdown over the things he said. Another, the girls said, had an afair with the teacher. She left school and had a baby. No one knows if it was his or not. Well the teacher is gone. Took the school over 5 years to get him out and he left a trail of emotionally damaged girls. At least the school saved face by taking the politically correct stand. The school administrators are happy :)

in response to "Large private schools in tri- state area. As a follow up to whether or not the grandfather paid tuition. He backed out and refused. He remarried and the new wife would have “none of that nonsense”. There you have it. My niece went on fin aid and survived. Funny how so many financial promises are broken.

Well here’s the follow up- my niece is graduating this Sunday from a state of connecticut university. All worked out well! She has loans unfortuntately. But she is happy with her choice of college and she met a nice young man at college (that is motivated and has goals- imagine that?) and I think someday they will wed. So she is starting her career. Life can be funny at times as her younger sister will go to a private college. After hearing big sister discuss her college, the younger one decided on a private college. So she is all set. I doubt anyone will read this, but I think a follow up is helpful to others on the CC board.
