What are some schools in the south that are comparable on the same level (academically and socially) as a school such as Penn State or Ohio State in the north?

U Florida, Texas A&M, UT Austin, Georgia

Agree with those being the four. Texas A&M, however, is it’s own little weird corner of the world socially. Socially, it wouldn’t come close to having the cultural and political diversity of Ohio State or Penn State.

It’s a solid school academically, but one should make damn sure that they fit in socially or they’re in for a rude surprise.

Virginia Tech, UNC, NC State, Univ. of South Carolina, Clemson, Auburn.

Clemson, UVA, VT

Virginia Tech, UNC, NC State, Univ. of South Carolina, Clemson, Auburn.
Clemson, UVA, VT

I’d put UNC and UVA a notch above OSU and PSU as peers of Michigan and Wisconsin.

I’d put the rest a notch, or more, below Ohio State and Penn State.

Well, Penn State and Ohio State ARE very similar…what I call “Second Tier” large state flagships (first tier being Berkeley, Michigan, UNC, etc.)

Amongst big public (W&M is too small) Southern schools:

First Tier
Virginia
UNC
UT-Austin

Second Tier
Florida
Georgia
Maryland (if you consider that southern)
Va Tech
