Which printers do you guys recommend for dorms?

For the money the HP p1006 (its been discontinued, but I just found one on clearance for $90) or the new P1102 is great. Nice and small, quick and the cartridges last a long time.

If money is an issue, Walmart has some really cheap ($35-ish) Epsons that are pretty small and come with FULL ink cartridges. This is what my S has, and didn’t need to buy ink for a year.

I have an HP J4580 “all-in-one” and really liked it in terms of performance and features, but I am trying to get a laser printer for next year. I do a LOT more printing than I had anticipated.

Laser - needs much less maintenence, works more reliabily, and no ink bleeding vs. inkjet. Your cost per page may most likely to be much lower too.

Agreed with kerrbo. I have a HP P1006 LJ and I can go hundreds of sheets on one cartridge.

I have a Brother laser printer, it’s been amazing.

Made printing those last minute assignments, or long research papers quick and relatively easy. It jammed up on me once or twice at most in the whole year and it worked great till the end of the semester. I hope to take it back in the fall.

The cost is worth it, I’d go with laser. Both my friends who came with ink jets ran into problems on multiple occasions if I remember correctly, one of them had to stop using it altogether.

-2 cents

i have a Canon imageCLASS MF4350d. It was a little expensive (about 250), and toners are definitely a little more expensive than inkjet cartridges, but if you do a lot of printing, the black and white laser is a good option. a multifunction is also good if you need to copy or scan things. i do all of these things quite frequently so it works for me. but it all depends on your needs.

all in all though, laser is probably the best (and most cost effective) option.

Most schools (and retailers) will toss in a free printer when you buy your computer. Who cares what type it is if it’s free!?

^^anyone who cares about the follow-up cost.
I have an inkjet, canon ip4-something, with scanner and stuff. Cartridges are really cheap online (around 70cent apiece), so I just bought 20 or so, and now I’m fine forever.

I use about 1 black cartridge /500-1000 pages, so practically nothing. And it’s nice to print something in colour sometimes.

Last year I went through a 700 page cartridge every three weeks or so. o.O And the cartridges were really not cheap, probably like $20.

Maybe I am just screwed no matter what printer I get for next year. lol.

Alexander1, where did you find such cheap cartridges?

I have a Brothers Laser printer and I love it. Definitely save money and go laser. If you need color printing (and I never did this past year, you can pay 10 cents to go to the library, or something like that, and print in color).

I think it depends on your campus and the needs you’ll have for printing. I didn’t have a printer at all for undergrad and never had a problem with it since I could always swing by a library or computer cluster to print out anything I need.

I would recommend getting a combo printer/scanner/copier. I wound up borrowing my friends’ scanners a couple of times since the ones at the library would always be on the fritz or clogged up by other students.

I have a Brother laser, too. It’s great and cheap for a laser – I don’t remember the per page costs but I remember choosing it because it paid for itself. There’s one button and one on/off switch, so it’s idiot proof too.

Oh, and it’s wireless.

Edit: It’s also a good time to buy them (90 bucks right now, with $18 generic toner replacements)

First, check your school’s printing policy. If they offer any amount of free printing, it probably won’t pay for you to have your own printer. Some schools will give you unlimited free printing, some have a page limit (like 500 pages per semester or something). Mine charges $.10 a page, so I decided to go ahead and get a printer after my first quarter.

Next, just get a black and white laser. When it starts running out of toner, you can just shake it and it will work for a while longer. And do you actually think you’ll need to print things in color? I prefer HP printers, but it’s a good idea to read some reviews.

Do roommates usually share a printer, or does each one usually have their own?

I would get my own. I felt guilty about using my roommate’s ink after the first semester.

I offered to share with my roommate but she didn’t. I was glad, because within a month I didn’t like her anymore and didn’t want her to use my stuff.

I use the printer at the university if I can, but given my commuter status, I have a printer at home as well if needed.
