Yes, we need to know, if something is dropped off at our main post office by the San Francisco airport today, hours usually on Sunday, until midnight, etc., will it receive the deeply necessary Jan 1. postmark?

this doesnt help original poster, but at the Houston International Airport a 24 hr post office exists on lee road, and they have been known to stamp even after midnight … hope SF has a simialr deal

You might try looking online. I have tried calling our local post office before with no luck. There wasn’t even an option to talk to a real person.

I would suggest that when you check to see if a PO is open 24 hours, that it means they have a clerk available those 24 hours to stamp the envelope. Sometimes POs advertise they’re open 24 hours, but then the fine print reveals their lobby is available 24 hours to check PO boxes, etc.

But in the lobby are often the computerized stations where you weigh the package, generate a postage label[ with Jan 1 date on it] slap it on the package and drop it in a box to be picked up. Viola! Mission accomplished.

If worst comes to worst, check a Kinkos that has a Fedex counter. Even if it’s not shipped till tomorrow, you could get a receipit that you delivered it, and fax that to the school if necessary. Besides, shipping by Fedex would get the app there before regular mail.

I’ve also heard UPS has a service that ships on holidays, but is very expensive.

Go to the USPS website from home and print out an Express mail or Priority mail label, which will have today’s date on it. You will obv. need to pay with a credit card online.

No need to rush to the airport or anywhere. Drop off to your regular post office tomorrow.

In any case, everyone gets really paranoid about these post mark dates; I seriously doubt that most admissions offices throw the applications in the trash can that are dated Jan.2 or Jan 3.

i see some voices of reason coming through … i went over to Stanford website to see what was being said… there are at least two threads -from students of --oh I forgot to order official transcripts…oh i forgot to get teacher recs --obviously with HS out of session these will be after the Jan 1 due

Chocoholic has the right idea. though it is now 11:48 pm EST we went online through usps, paid for and printed express mail label which has a January 1 postmark. We will mail tomorrow at the regular post office, but our D’s peer letter for Dartmouth will have the Jan. 1 date the school required. If you go to the Dartmouth CC sight there are several threads about this topic just on sending peer recs and some (what I think) interesting comments about express mail envelopes that sit unopened in admissions offices for weeks. However, I know we would all be cheating fate to simply trust pony express with anything this important and have the entire application thrown out. I agree with another poster- what’s with the January 1 date?
