Late attendence in grad school

Hi,
I have been admitted into virginia based grad school. I am in software engineering. The classes will start from 26th august. But due to family reason I shall not be able to attend classes till Nov 1, 2013. The last day of class in dec7th.
The college mandates that min 9 credits are required per semester to maintain full time student. Is it possible to persue 9 credits for the remaining of the semester?
Please advise.

My understanding of a semester system is that you have classes that gradually increase in the subject matter with a final test that examines what you have learned over the quarter/semester. You’ll only be in classes for a month and you have to play catch-up or do all of your classes online. Some classes in this major require on-site labs so that will be tough. The only one who knows if you can do this is you university.

You should call the registrar office (or graduate school dean) at your school and see if you can take a leave of absence. You’re going to miss 65% of your classes. That doesn’t make sense to me.

I would recommend that you contact your department. Graduate school tends to be specific to what the department requires, and you might also have to consider if you have research or TA commitments as part of your program. Ask your department if it would be possible to complete the work for these courses at home (do they record lectures or post slides? Are you able to submit any assignments from home), or if they will allow you to start your program in the Spring. What different departments will allow is specific to your particular program, so it’s best to contact someone in your department.

Why are you asking strangers who have no knowledge of the grad school’s requirements and waiting for their guesses? Why aren’t you speaking directly with your Director?

Surely he/she can give you advice or definitive alternatives, no?

No. If you can’t start on August 26, you can’t start this semester. You might be able to miss a week of class, but trying to start on November 1 is not going to happen.

And yes, you should call your school and ask them, but I am reasonably sure that they are going to tell you to start in the spring.
