Late/rolling admissions with boarding schools?

Hi! I am writing to inquire for a nephew who needs to switch schools almost last minute. He currently attends a local private day school, but his father just confirmed a job relocation that has necessitated a search for a boarding school. Such awkward timing!

The student is currently a rising 10th-grader with solid grades, and is likely varsity-caliber golfer for most schools. I understand that most prestigious schools might have filled their class about a month ago. What are some decent schools that have rolling admissions? The family is flexible with any location, long as the academics are decent. It would be great if the school comes with a golf team, but it is not a must.

Thank you!

When DS was at George School ¶, he had a friend who entered at a funky time in the year for a similar reason. That one would be worth contacting. (And they have a golf team!)

If you had a list of schools you liked, it could be worthwhile to reach out to them to see if they could accommodate the late application. I definitely appreciate the chick-egg conundrum you face – why research them if they’re not accepting? – but you still need to make a good match to be a good candidate and ultimately a happy student.

To that end, you might also want to consider help from a private counselor. They tend to be well connected and could presumably help make a great fit without wasting time on schools where it’s just not going to work out. @RoonilWazlib99 used one they liked. Others here may have ideas for you.

Try the boys schools - Avon Old Farms, Salisbury, Trinity Pawling - they seem to be more likely to have spots “off-cycle”. AOF has string golf team w D1 commits. Not sure about the other 2.

The Winchendon School (Winchendon, MA) has late admissions, a golf team and offers AP classes. It’s co-ed, smaller (285 students) and nice small classes.

Chapel Hill Chauncey Hall (not sure about golf) has off-season admits.

if really a truly excellent golfer it can’t hurt to reach out to coaches at other places if you have time, IMO, though expect a lot of nos. We have a family friend with a potential D1 recruit (not for golf) that managed to get in to one of the MOST selective prep schools over the summer (as a boarder) year before last…The kid is a key contributor in another sport, too, I believe.

This is great. I had a family friend who sent their child to George and liked it. I will have the parents reach out. Thanks again!

Thank you. I have some basic knowledge of these schools, and will definitely ask the parents to reach out!

Interesting school that I’d never heard of, but it seems very warm and welcoming. Thanks!

Great to hear. We will explore, thank you!

Canterbury School in New Milford, CT usually has late admissions. It is a beautiful school and they do have a golf team. Definitely worth checking out.

Maybe Woodberry Forest School in Orange, VA? 1200 acre campus with a nine-hole Donald Ross golf course. It has been an amazing school for my son.
