We are in the process of planning a late season ski trip to Park City during ds#2’s spring break, the last week of March. We’ve been to Alta/Snowbird but I’ve never been to PC (though my DH has but hasn’t been much help in the planning, lol). I am hoping the conditions will still be decent, as there is so much more to do in PC for the boys than at Snowbird.

We plan to rent a car, so if we want to (or have to, due to conditions) go to different slopes we can. Any suggestions for which stores in town offer the best deal on lift tickets and rentals? I believe there are some stores in Salt Lake City that have good lift ticket discounts. Which are they? Or is there a good, reasonably priced rental place in Park City somewhere?

I want the boys to be able to come and go as they please, as my DH may or may not be able to join us and I dont want them to feel stuck/constrained. Do you recommend staying slopside and then ride the trolly to town at night, or stay in town, perhaps near the town lift, and then be able to waqlk to Main Street at night? Any recommendations for good aprez ski places, dinner, nightlife (if there is any that late in the season)? Thanks!!!

We’re planning one too . . . the week of the 15th. Where are you staying? (we’re still figuring that out). We’ve never been there in the winter, so I’m anxious for advice as well!!

You will be there 2 weeks before us, so you will have to report back with all the details!!
Right now I am leaning towards staying ont he mountain, rather than in town. The condos over by the new lift onthe golf course look nice, but to far from everything, so we aren’t considering those. You?

It’s easy enough to drive into town in the evenings. We never had trouble parking. There are a number of lots. Stay near the not-downtown part of the mountain. It’s been a number of years since we stayed at Park City (but went several times). I wasn’t impressed by any of the condos we rented. We weren’t paying a ton, but they seemed sort of small and gloomy. Perhaps the newer properties will be better. There is a ski rental place in SLC sort of on the way to the mountain where we got our lift tickets at a discount. I don’t remember the name, but I’m sure you could find it if you google it.

My advice to you would be to NOT go. Your family tends to break things…

We have been to Park City many times over the past 10 years and find we have the best luck with renting condos a couple of miles from town. I would suggest VRBO to see what is available for that week as it is later in the season.

Park City and Deer Valley are much more expensive places to ski than Alta or Snowbird. I remember about 7 years ago we acutally stayed in Salt Lake and our kids were younger and we could buy an adult ticket for places like Snowbird or Alta and get a kids one for free.

We love to ski Park City, but love Deer Valley even more as it is skiers only, no snowboarders. If you go to Deer Valley you can eat lunch in their cafeteria which is very good, but I would recommend the Stein Eriksen Lodge for their lunch/brunch which is a fantastic midday break from skiing.

THanks for all the tips! As yourger s is a snowboarder, it makes sense for us to base out of Park City. Aslo, as I mentioned, I want the boys to be able to enjoy the aprez ski and town, so accessibility is our goal this trip. In past years we’ve stayed further from the slopes and driven in or ridden local transportation, but looking for convenience this time.

I’ve been busy on VRBO and gotten several responses. Still trying to get a feel for in town vs at the base of the mtn. Where do people hang out after skiing? Are there many places at the base or do people go in town? Once I get comfy back int he condo I tend to veg, but I dont want to hold the boys back.

And agreed, MOWC, I am hoping for NO BROKEN ANYTHING by ANYBODY this trip. THat would be a pleasant change.

Anyone live in SLC who would be willing to buy us a few of the passes being sold at Costco? They aren’t available here…

She’s got me beat, although my husband just fractured his fibula in the moguls a couple weeks ago so my fam is catching up quickly on the ski injury list. Personally I’ll take a gloomy condo if it’s ski in/ski out. My youngest is up and first in line for the lifts and the older ones sleep in. I love everyone being able to come and go without have to deal with transportation issues to and from slopes. Going to town to eat or hang out we are generally all together or the kids are going on their own as a group, but the times/breaks/lunches/sleeping routines are all completely different so I’m all about ski in/ski out or at least ski in.

We’ve been to PC every winter for the last 20 years. It’s the BEST! WE like to stay at The Canyons. The amount of terrain there is unbeatable and they have great snowboard options. We usually stay at the Grand Summit. You walk out the door and step onto the gondola. They have a shuttle to town or you can take the bus which is just a few steps down the street. We have also used VRBO and stayed at Red Pines which is just at the bottom of the cabriolet at The Canyons. The bus system is great at PC so you don’t really need a car. There are so many restaurants in PC you don’t have to worry about a good place to eat. The town is full of really fun shops. Check out the Egyptian Theatre. THere’s a website for them. If you fly in the morning to get to PC you can ski free that afternoon with your boarding pass at THe Canyons. You have to go on the website and fill out a form before you get there. [The Canyons Resort - Park City, Utah.](http://www.thecanyons.com) Look for accommodation deals that include lift tickets. Another really fun place to ski is Snowbasin which is about an hour from PC. There are no accommodations there but the lift ticket is cheap and it is a super mountain with very little lines. Their amenities are of the same class as Deer Valley. There are some good deals for renting equipment in downtown PC. You can even find places that will deliver your equipment to your accommodations. I like to rent my equipment at The Canyons because they also have a place at mid-mountain so if you are having an issue, they will fix it at mid-mountain. It’s only about 30 minutes from SLC airport to PC, so you can fly in the morning and be on the mountain by noon, even if you are coming from the East Coast.

Spring Gruv is happening in PC the last week of MArch. [Spring Grv - The Canyons Resort - Park City, Utah - SKI FREE](http://www.springgruv.com) They also have College Daze going on before that. If you go to [The Canyons Resort - Park City, Utah.](http://www.thecanyons.com) you will see all of the events if you click On the Mountain and then events. YOu can decide if it’s something your kids would like - lots of events and music. I’m glad to make a restaurant recommendation if you tell me what you’re looking for - price range and type of food. The Blind Dog is great food, they also have a sushi bar. They are not downtown. Nacho Mamas is right next to them. YOu can guess what they serve. THe RIverhorse has music, white tablecloth, very fine restaurant - super food. Zoom is an awesome restaurant, also very fine dine. Chimayo is southwestern food - we ate there over New Year’s. Purple Sage is also wonderful - be sure to get their corn muffins. Go to ParkCityInfo.com and they have a complete list of restaurants as well as various coupons and rental equipment deals. I love Park City - can you tell??

Sherpa,
You are a godsend! Thank you!!! And what a small world…

POTOmom-
Thanks for that info too!!! I will DEFINITELY look into the events at the Canyons. Sounds like fun! The restaurants you listed are in PC, yes? Not at the Canyons?

You guys are GREAT!

Oh and Rodney-
Not sure if/when DH is going to be able to join us. Depends on his work schedule (he just started a new job). So far I am the only one not to have broken anything. I’d like to keep it that way too! DH has recovered pretty well from his fx ankle/fibula/ligament tear, older s still has the titanium rod in his leg and his nose, despite surgery, is still a little crooked. Younger s’s fx shoulder is all better. I do not want to pay any more medical bills, expecially since our insurance changes im March!!!

All of those restaurants are in PC. HOwever, Canyons is just a few minutes from PC. From the interstate, Canyons is the first resort, then Park City resort is next to town and Deer Valley is on the far side of town. All very close together.

H and I took the whole family to Deer Valley three years ago when youngest D was a senior in high school. We rented a town house that was just minutes from skiing. The kids used a resort shuttle to get around most of the time, even though we did have a rental car (we rented it at the Salt Lake Airport and drove to Deer Valley). The last night we were there we had a nice dinner at a restaurant in the Stein Eriksen Lodge (can’t remember the name of it, but it was quite good.). Youngest D had only skied in New England and she was in heaven the entire time we were out there. I don’t ski anymore, but I found lots of things to do–snowshoeing, a few shops and art galleries in Park City, etc.

I liked Chimayo for food and No Name for drinks. Neither place is terribly pretentious and the food at Chimayo was quite good though everything is pricey like most resort towns.

“It’s only about 30 minutes from SLC airport to PC, so you can fly in the morning and be on the mountain by noon, even if you are coming from the East Coast.”

First time I experienced altitude sickness was doing just that. Flying very early from sea level, NJ, hitting Alta, and that night being very sick.
Alta, may be significantly higher than Park City.

We lived in SLC for a year, 30 years ago, so altitude sickness was a real surprise-and, no fun at all.

Got the airfare booked and the lodging will be nailed down later today (spoke to the owner of the condo- just waiting for his property mgr to contact me to finalize the details). I am soaking in all the suggestions and thinking through (probably overthinking) the details. We are going to stay at the base of the mountain (PC) – got a great deal on a condo- and the condo owner says the ski shop in the building is very reasonable. It’d be really convenient, so I’ll shoot them an email and see what they have to offer, as usually the rentals on the mountain are the most expensive. I have a “ski Utah” brochure we picked up from one of our local ski shops, and it has an ad/coupons for that place. Its Utah Ski & Golf.

Potomom- you are clearly very knowledgeable on all this stuff. How are their rates (Utah Ski & Golf)?? The advantage of using them is that younger s likes to ski some days and snowboard others. Being able to switch out at the condo would be very convenient. Also for getting a 1/2 day of skiing in that last day.

We are going to go to The Canyons on Sat. Thanks for the tip on the concerts/festival, POTOmom! The Canyons looks HUGE. Doubt we’ll cover more than half of it in one day, but I think we’ll still spend most of our time at PC, since we are staying right at the base. Still thinking it all through…

And DH will hopefully fly in to join us Thurs morning. We’ll be on the slopes so he’ll have to shuttle in from the airport. Any suggestions for the best shuttle service?

Have a great time! You can get around the whole PC/DV/Canyons area pretty well on the free shuttles. Remember to allow for adjustment to the altitude. We’ve been very happy with Park City Transport for shuttle.

There is an outlet mall with a large number of stores less than 20 minutes away from town, if you find yourself there and needing any clothing provisions. Son ripped his snowboard pants on the lift one day and I found a nice quality pair for far cheaper than the lift shop.
