Late Transfer

Hey everyone,

I am an incoming senior at a 4-year university and I pursued a major that I am not at all interested in. I have joined a few clubs relating to the degree and I have tried to mingle with fellow classmates but nothing really clicked. With that said, I’m supposed to begin my professional life soon where I’ll work for the next few decades and I don’t want to be absolutely miserable. My question to all of you is what the process would be like if I wanted to apply to another undergrad. program, specifically a switch from something business-related to a major in STEM. Would any school consider me or would they blow me off because they don’t want to have to guess why I am going for round 2 of undergrad.? Please disregard the factor of financing the education for the time being. I only want to focus on the feasibility of getting into a well-known/respected university and what factors they might take into consideration, if they consider me at all.

Thanks in advance.

What is your GPA and have you taken the basic coursework that is needed for a STEM degree? If not, think about taking those courses at your current university and changing majors. It might take you less time to finish.

Back in the last century, I graduated with a liberal arts degree, worked a bit, then went back to college to take STEM courses before applying to grad school in an applied science. So I do know that this kind of thing can be done.

However, as xramancs has written above, a lot depends on what classes you have already completed. I had first year Calculus, General Chem, and General Physics at my first college. That meant I stepped straight into Organic Chem at the second place. If you haven’t had any science or higher math, you might be looking at three years of coursework to finish that potential STEM degree. In that case, finishing your current degree, then picking up the first two years of science coursework on the cheap at your local community college at night while working, might make better sense.
