lateness & attendance affecting admission

hi everyone!!

i know how bad this is gonna sound but I currently have 6 absences and 39 tardies and it’s gonna be on my mid year report sent out to my rd schools and my ed 2 school (nyu). around 10 of the tardies shouldn’t even be tardies and I’ve asked my assistant principal to change it but he just dismisses it even after I’ve gotten my first class teacher to ask him to update it as well. I’m scared as to how much this may affect my application and how much it even weighs. i had a death in the family around oct/nov and I had to take over a lot of family responsibilities like waking up at 5am to make breakfast for my sister while my mom was grieving. around this time I was working on applications so that definitely didn’t help at all. it also takes me an hour to even get to school because I have to transfer three trains. i didn’t mention this in my additional info section because I didn’t want it to seem like an “excuse” and I wasn’t even sure if my tardiness/absences would show up. what should I do??

Ask your GC to put a statement in your college apps about your family situation and its impact on your attendance/promptness. See if they can intervene on the record although with their statement, it may not matter. Please act promptly on this.

If the tardies are genuinely wrong – meaning you were there on time and it was marked that you were not – you may want to ask a lawyer to write a letter. My guess, reading between the lines, is that you were tardy but it didn’t matter (ie, you were late for a first period study hall.)

I’m guessing that overall, this will not be the thing AOs spend much time on, so yes, while it would be better to get it fixed because it could be a ding, it may not matter at all.

Your school counselor can tell you how to best deal with this.

Were the remaining 29 tardies all related to the family death? Let your school counselor explain.

Class? Or a study hall? This sounds like a class to me.

Regardless…speak to your school counselor, and they can tell you what to do.

Sorry for your loss. Your record is your record.

Most schools are stat based.

I wish you luck with NYU but if you don’t get in, life will go on fine.

The timing is a bit hard as ED 2 was due two weeks ago.

Did you apply to a few schools that are both affordable and you’d like to attend ?

That’s what matters.

Unfortunately when people get rejected, one never knows why. NYU may not even look at this.

But agree with others - the counselor can address but they may not in a way to help you. You’ll never know. But I assume their report is in already.

Build your list properly and whether you are at NYU or u New Hampshire - you can have a great experience and get a wonderful education.

The other thing to look at - do you still have these responsibilities in the AM ? Should you go to school now or take a gap year or perhaps start at a cc where you have more flexibility.

Good luck.

This 100%.

OP please don’t look back at what you should or could have done retrospectively it won’t be helpful in my opinion.

Wishing you luck and I am hopeful and optimistic that with the support of your GC any impact of the tardiness can be addressed and mitigated.
