Bring a lot of boxes! The supply is terrible. We want to buy N95 masks but they are not available in stores.
OK happy to bring as many boxes as are needed. But we will not be arriving until next week
jym626, The closest and most convenient hardware store, Downtown Walnut Creek Ace, has been getting shipments daily. When I just called they said they were “about 5 minutes away from running out”.
Someone said you may get rain this weekend. That should help.
The pictures of the people camping in the grass field are likely the ones in the grass adjacent to the Walmart parking lot in Chico. They are being evicted and told to go to the one shelter that is not full, though many would rather stay out of norovirus range. Rain is forecast for next week.
The local organizations have asked that people stop sending “stuff” and send cash instead. People have been very generous. There is a limit to old pieces of clothing needed by people whose only possession is a car and not enough cash for gas. FEMA is handing out $1000 resettlement checks for each family. It is not enough for someone with no job and no assets. Like always, the poor suffer the most.
My cousin bought a trailer and is living on a friend’s property, though they don’t really have a vehicle to tow it. They are hoping to be let back in to their house soon to grab sheets, pillows and blankets.
For now, my folks are just homeless vagabonds. At least they had insurance.
Just received text from D1, she has an N 95 mask
The NYT has a good article about the wildland-urban intersection here:
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/15/climate/california-fires-wildland-urban-interface.html?action=click&auth=login-email&login=email&module=Top+Stories&pgtype=Homepage
Verified by several articles from other sources, by no means are these fires, individually or collectively, reducible to a force-field known as “global warming.” Climate change is probably one factor, but hardly the most salient of all factors. If it were, Phoenix, Palm Springs, and many other even-warmer places would be igniting supposedly spontaneously due to “global warming.” You can turn on your oven to broil or maximum roast, and if there are only wire racks in there, chances are that your kitchen won’t suddenly catch fire. You need kindling to sustain a destructive fire – you know, fuel
As is often true for the NYT, many, many of the Comments are even more informative than the article itself. I recommend reading both.
We arrive next week. Will bring masks. Plan to buy them tomorrow. PM me tonight if in need and in the area.
Make sure you get a good respirator mask. So sorry for these terrible fires, the destruction and loss of life is heartbreaking. My friends in San Francisco said that USF was closed again today and will be through the weekend.
I ordered some N95 masks from Amazon yesterday. Paid the extra $3.99 shipping fee and they arrived today. Just checked and now they are unavailable.
Bring a bunch. You might be able to make some money on it.
My boss just notified us that we can work from home all week. I would be happy except that there are some machines that I really need that can more or less only be accessed from work.
@dietz199 Good for you! All the ones I looked at yesterday on Amazon couldn’t be delivered until the 23rd at the earliest! Dang. They are very hard to find.
@ProfessorPlum168 …gotta say boo to your comment that “You might be able to make some money on it.” I detest those who try and price gouge in tragic situations…
@CADREAMIN Here in CO we have sirens, they’re tested regularly.
I am not interested in pedaling masks, @ProfessorPlum168! Just trying to be helpful.
You’d actually be helpful bringing some over. There are none to be found here.
I just found out that someone I grew up with lost his home and his mother in law lost hers too and had NO INSURANCE. Oh dear lord.
I live on the SF Peninsula, but was out of town most of the week…When I left the air seemed to be getting better, so I was quite surprised how bad it was when I got home late last night. I couldn’t find any masks locally. Just trying to stay inside. Hoping that next week’s promised rain comes through.
It looks like the big game between Cal and Stanford has been postponed to Dec. 1.

Oh my goodness, I just saw that there are still 1000+ people unaccounted for as of tonight. It is hard to fathom those numbers, and apparently, according to one article I read, they have volunteers searching for remains? Has anyone else heard this? Sounds like a call for perhaps the National Guard to assist?
I suspect the “volunteers” in that case are probably from western state search & rescue teams, volunteer community firefighters, etc. I doubt they are just people from off the street offering to help.
While they probably will find many more bodies :(, that list may have people that aren’t really missing but don’t realize they are listed, duplicates due to misspellings, etc. I think they combed back though every single call or email they got since the beginning to update that list in the past couple of days.
