Latest California fires

cute pun, @jym626
I think you meant peddling.

@alwaysamom
Keep in mind that officials have said more than once that there may be duplicates and even triplicates within the names of the missing. And some may not be accounted for because they did make it out safely but are not nearby.

There were calls to house displaced residents. I was willing to, but the invitation was for those “near” Butte County, and I’m not near, so I decided not to. But some may have escaped and found friends or relatives in other counties or in the PNW. I expect it will take quite a while to locate everyone or otherwise account for them, and there’s no way to predict yet how many of those missing are dead.

I dictated it, epiphany, and it spelled it incorrectly.

It sounds like many on the new list of missing are people who fled but have not checked in. Anyone who has at any time been reported missing are listed, because they want to be thorough. The article I read quotes people who did not know they were on it.

So though I am fearful the numbers will continue to rise, I am praying they are not nearly as big as that list.

Yes, I understand that the numbers are fluid but they keep increasing. If even 10, 20, or 30% of those numbers turn out to be accurate, it’s a very sad situation.

I certainly agree, @alwaysamom Huge numbers. Very discouraging.

I changed my profile picture to my parents’ melted van that was in their driveway. The fire was hotter than cremation temps.

@Magnetron Oh, my, I feel for you and for your poor parents. This must be so very difficult for elderly parents.

Magnetron, I hope you can share with your parents the love and concern that’s been expressed here.

Many hanks for the support. They are doing OK, as sad about losing their community as much as about all their possessions. After the initial flurry of contacts to make sure everyone they know is alive, they are all just trying to figure out what to do next. Mom’s mahjong group, the walking group, their bowling team, Dad’s tennis and coffee group, the neighborhood … gone forever and scattered. Bowling balls, tennis rackets, that fancy mahjong set, the ping pong table in the basement, dragon-footed compass holders from my great-grandfather’s ships and the cedar-bark rug my great-great grandmother made by hand … erased as if they never existed.

We’re all most grateful that Mom was too tired to drive them back home Wednesday afternoon and decided to go Thursday instead.

It’s almost beyond my ability to comprehend an entire community being completely vanquished…

Have a box of N-95 masks. After looking at these photos, am wondering. if we should get more https://www.sfgate.com/california-wildfires/article/Bay-Area-air-quality-smoke-before-after-photos-SF-13399245.php

This looks worse than Seattle last summer. And it was REALLY bad here last summer. :frowning:

Magnetron… hugs. I cannot imagine waking up one morning and being told that a major portion of my life has been erased and that some of my friends might have suffered a horrible pain and died in flames.

@jym626 if I recall correctly from our fires last December that children need a child’s mask. Not sure if you want to see if you can order smaller masks for your granddaughter. Those photos are scary.

@jym626 if you just took boxes of them to the shelters, I’m sure that would go so far. As many as you can manage. What horror. Anything else I could say would not comply with CC rules.

@jym626 is coming to San Francisco to visit family. The fires, and the shelters, are almost two hundred miles from there. It’s about as far as from Boston to New York City. Yep, its just as if there was a horrific fire in Boston and the air was so dangerous people couldn’t go outside in the Bronx.

@jym626 depends on when you are coming. We are predicted to get rain on Wednesday (I haven’t looked lately to see the likelihood… whether it’s near certain or only like 40%). Once it rains more than a bit they won’t be needed in the bay area. Even today things were improving… numbers were close to 150 by late afternoon and very few people who were outside were wearing masks (although there were fewer people out than normal). Maybe keep an eye on the weather forecast over the next day or two and see if the rain really comes through or not.

@washugrad, @sylvan8798, @mom60 @“Cardinal Fang” I am following the weather but still planning to bring the box of masks for my family and the person who back-channeled me asking for a few masks. The rain may arrive the day we fly in, but hopefully won’t affect flights. Even if the air quality improves, the masks may be helpful at some point, so I will try to fit the box in amongst the holiday gifts ,etc I am packing. Was hoping not to check a bag, but it looks like I will have to.
I did not see any child sized N-95 masks where I shopped (they are mostly sold here for construction work- sanding, sawing, etc) and suspect that if the air quality remains bad we will be keeping outside activity to a minimum, especially with the grand-baby who is getting over a cold. Yes, our plan is to be spending time with family and older s’s in-laws, and we aren’t renting a car, so won’t be in a position to deliver or take masks to shelters, etc. When we see younger s and wife who will join us for Thanksgiving, we will give them a few masks to take down to their part of the southern peninsula/SV.

@Magnetron – My DH’s bro and kids-- three households – all live in Chico. We know they are OK, one family was evacuated – and the Vet had to evacuate her practice and animals – but i had no idea until today the magnitude of this. Thank you for those links. Oh dear. It sounds so devastating. question: are the fires still burning? is Chico in any danger? SO sorry for your family . . . .

My younger daughter, a student at Stanford, is now home for Thanksgiving break and is relieved to be away from the air. I am relieved, too. We were a little concerned that her flight from San Francisco would be cancelled yesterday but it was not nor was it delayed, despite the smoke and fog combination still very visible.
