Well, it’s that time again, time to start looking for new a new mattress. Body parts are starting to pinch, creak, stick, cramp and speak unkind messages to us in the mornings.

Over the course of the past 25 years we have had…
• A sleep number bed- the first one one the market. It seemed like a great solution, addressing our differing preferences. However, it grew mold, slept hot and really did feel like an air mattress with a good cover.

•Standard firm mattress. This started with a simple mattress pad and over time we added a wool pad and/or a feather/down topper.

• A ‘quilted top’ standard mattress, again with a wool pad and feather/ down topper.

Also during this time we tried two different memory foam toppers. HATED them, they slept hot and I felt like I was heaving myself out of a ditch when trying to turn over. In addition, both of these developed stain/body outlines on H’s side…he sleeps very hot. The first one actually developed mold and the second - antimicrobial version - developed very strange brown blotches on the underside. So, no more memory foam

Although we both like the feather/down toppers they do tend to get lumpy. There’s a ridge the forms between where the two of us sleep. Yes, a good fluffing and shaking makes that all even out but frankly, I don’t want to be thrashing a very heavy cover into the air each morning and remaking the bed.

We’re also not interested in ‘pillow tops’. I pull all toppers off the mattress on a regular basis and they get hung out in the hot brutal CA sun for the better part of a day. It sanitizes and cleans these items very nicely. The thought of having a pillow top which absorbs all the sweat and gunk for years is very unappealing. Adding a protective - moisture proof - cover doesn’t appeal either. I make H pull the entire mattress out and bake it in the sun also.

I’ve started investigating latex mattresses and latex toppers. The purported benefits include:

Intrinsic antimicrobial, anti bed bed bug, anti general gross stuff.
Latex, unlike memory foam, does compress but rather bounces back to support in a more floating type of sense.
Natural latex has no petroleum additives and therefore no off gassing. It does have it’s own odor which dissipates.

The problem is these are still a bit of a niche market and difficult to actually try. And, they are expensive. There is a local store selling a high end product but their return policy is restrictive when compared to the ‘standard’ mattress market. If you buy their complete bed - mattress with topper - you can exchange the topper as many times as you want until you find the right fit. But, if you wind up hating the product…no returns.

I’m leaning towards a very high quality topper - to be placed on a standard mattress. A less risky financial venture with which to start.

I was hoping to get some input from folks who have tried this type of product.
