Latex mattresses vs ...

We are mattress shopping (it’s been 10 years…) and on my foray into Macy’s the salesman pushed the new Latex mattresses, at about $2900 for a Queen. He said they are not hot like the foam mattresses. But after googling other opinions someone said the advantage of the Marriott Mattress, which is foam - a different kind than the latex - is that it is not hot like the latex…

any opinions?

Thanks!

memphismom,
google search on…

jamison bedding…

and check out their website for mattress and company information. they offer both the “resort foam” and the “talalay latex” mattresses. i think you can still actually call jamison and order directly and they will deliver and set-up…and haul away the old mattress. they are happy to speak with you and give you information on the phone. give them a call !

we’ve slept on one of their hotel ones and it was so comfortable that we called to ask the hotel about the mattress after already checking out.

you might first want to try a memory foam mattress topper on your current mattress to see if it is something that you like.

seems like a lot of manufacturers are now getting into the memory foam mattresses…sealy is one, i believe. be sure you understand the difference between mattresses with the solid foam versus the foam topper only ones. check out the mattresses by different manufacturers.

there is already a thread on cc about this topic…maybe a kind cc’er will please link it here for you.

thank you - Jamison makes the Marriott mattress and I found a great article (not on CC) about them…

I found the old thread - just about a year ago…

Please provide link! My mattress is starting to sag…

Hey, I just ordered a Marriott bed online since our bed is beyond help (even with a three inch memory foam topper). I’ve slept on Marriott beds and have always had a good experience. So why experiment?
So, I got a call to confirm my order yesterday and they insisted on finding out the last hotel I slept at where I was happy with the bed. Hah! I stayed in Hilton Head a two years ago - but there are so many Marriotts there that I can’t remember which one. I was told the Marriott we stayed at in London had a different bed - made in England. The one is Palm Springs (last year) had yet a different bed - springs instead of foam. They’re all different…that’s why she’s calling. They WILL NOT complete the order until I confirm the hotel.
Well, now I’m totally confused and I guess we have to live with our “jello” bed for that much longer. I tempted to spend a night at a Marrriott nearby just to test the bed…but I feel like that’s a royal waste of money. Oh well…
So what is the best Jamison bed? Please post the link!

this is the review I found of the Marriott mattress…

We just stayed last week at a Holiday Inn that had Tempur-pedic mattresses which I think are foam? I will NEVER stay at a hotel with those kinds of beds again. The first night I slept a total of 3 hours because I was so, so hot. I had the A/C on 64 and was cool/cold where I wasn’t touching mattress, but everywhere my body was on mattress, I was burning up. My husband said he was hot too, but he usually sleeps through anything. I complained to hotel and filled out a comment card. I too had been thinking about a new mattress, so thought it was good to try one of these out----for me, it is a big NO!

moving up for a new mattress shopper.

There are many knock-offs calling themselves “tempurpedic”. The quality varies greatly, and so do their properties. We had a mattress topper made of Novaform (Costco), and I was not too fond of it. When H decided that we needed a better mattress, we looked at the Tempurpedic brand, but I only agreed to buy it from a local store with generous trial period. Needless to say, the mattress never had a chance to go back to that store. We have a Dania platform bed which H reinforced with a couple of sheets of plywood to hold the mattress, so we saved a bundle by not buying a matching boxspring (or whatever it was called). Our mattress does not feel too hot or too cold - it is perfect. And it never needs flipping over or rotating, like the innerspring behemoth did.

(Frankly, based on how much the real deal costs, I would not expect a real Tempurpedic mattress at a Holiday Inn. :))

We have a latex mattress and love it. It is not a Tempurpedic or memory foam, it springs back rather than leaves an impression; we bought it from FloBeds online a couple of years ago.

Thank you, memphis mom for bringing this thread back up.

The heat issue is a big one for us as we live in the deep south. The last time we bought a mattress there were really no other options than various spring ones. So much more research this time!

I told my husband I’m going to start a mattress store that has a small showroom and a bunch of rooms in the back where customers can check in for the night and take a “test sleep.” It’s just so much money and such a hassle to do returns with an item this large.

For now we are sleeping on our guest room mattress, which is a good one but it’s just a regular mattress and I’m really intrigued by these newer options as a light sleep who tosses and turns a lot.

Does any one have any experience with the “sleep number” beds? I like very firm mattresses, my husband prefers softer…?

I slept on a sleep number bed at a Radisson a few years ago. HATED it. It made awful noises and we couldn’t get the settings right. I felt like I was sleeping on a big inflatable bed - correction…I didn’t sleep much at all that night. That said, I know there are those that like them.
We ended up with a foam bed from Marriott. It feels firm but it really has give - my creaky joints sink in at just the right places. And it’s not hot like the memory foam beds. We love it. And I really miss it now when I have to sleep on a normal bed in a hotel.
Another plus on the hotel beds is that you get to try them out for a night or two. Really makes a difference.

boysx3, My parents have a sleep number bed for a long time and absolutely love it for the very reason you describe. In fact, they are on their second one. Not because the first one broke but because they wanted to upgrade once the quieter motor version came out.

One thing I do not like about it is that I could really feel where each air bed was and the material seperating the two. It was not uncomfortable per se but I tend to be chilly at night and snuggle up to my hubby several times through out the night. The sensation of the surfaces under me changing woke me up each time. However, I would imagine that could be dealt with via somekind of mattress topper? Also, my parents say they don’t notice it at all.

we bought a Sealy “Pike” which I think of it as a “hybrid” - got it at the Mattress Firm - did not expect to do that! - it has latex foam over springs …dh wanted firm and I wanted fluff - we are both happy.
