Latin State Convention

Hi! I was just wondering how’s Latin State Convention like because this is my first year going with the Latin club at my school.
-Anyone who wants to give advice or share their story, I will appreciate it. :)

Hahah, it’s pretty nerdy, but really fun! Everyone at States stays in one big hotel, and there’s usually us, and one other big group (last year it was a Baptist Church on a ministry trip) staying there (not room for anyone else really, Latin Forum tends to book up a lot of the rooms!).

After settling in and waiting for schools from farther away to arrive, you head out to the Opening Banquet, wearing togas. Some people get really elaborate, but most just tie a bed sheet around their body (you might want to get that planned in advance, it’s harder than you’d think…). They have a Spirit Competition to see which school can yell the loudest, show the most spirit, all that stuff. There’s usually one or two schools who ALWAYS win because they’ve been coming to Forum forever and have a really strong Latin department.

That night, there’s a karaoke party in one of the Conference Rooms, and it lasts for a good three hours. You shoulda seen my Billie Jean, I wish I had a video of it hahah. But it’s really fun, you don’t have to sing (probably only 25% of the crowd does) but it’s fun to watch people and dance.

The next day is really the main one. You take your tests, Olympika goes on throughout the day, you know, just usual Regional Forum stuff. But then there’s also the Bazaar, and this is probably my favorite part: each school sets up a booth, and has to sell a food or item (your school picks it ahead of time, some sell tshirts, others lemonade and popcorn…things like that). It lasts for about two hours, and it gets pretty crazy. People get more into it than you’d think they would… I think I walked a good 10 miles back and forth from the Bazaar to Olympika trying to sell drinks.

There’s a dance that night, and personally I like karaoke night better, but it’s still fun!

The next morning is the awards ceremony .__________. Wow. All I can say is bring an iPhone or something because you’ll be there for a loooooooong time. If you thought the Regionals Awards Ceremony was long, just wait until you go to States. It’s exciting when you get into the parts that your school is in, but it’s painful sitting through everything else…

But yeah, States is really awesome, I can’t wait to go this year! :)

Thank u!! U must be from a different state. Ours is going to be in the out doors. We have a dance instead of karaoke. That’s really cool that u sang bille jean.

Yeah, my Latin teacher said hers was like that too! More like a summer camp.

I wonder what Nationals is like, I’ve always wanted to go but my school never has enough people who want to…

my friend who is a Latin fan meaning he’s knows everything about latin (history culture, etc.) said it’s super fun. this year it will be in NC.

NC isn’t too far from where I live…it’d be a good 10 hours, but I think it’d be fun to all go on a bus together! I’m VP of our latin club, so maybe I can try and get a group to go!

Lol we have a kid like that in my Latin class, she knows EVERYTHING about Latin, sometimes she even corrects my teacher.

oh my gosh, the friend that i mentioned, he corrects about Latin grammar, history, etc. but he’s not one of annoying ppl u want to punch face, he helped me so much in Latin. Btw, how did u do on ur National Latin exam? I just wanted to get recognition that i passed but i am not aiming for gold, silver, or bronze.
