Not sure on exact stats, but:
Full IB program, good but not stellar GPA
bunch of decent but not extraordinary ecs: school leadership, clubs, school newspaper, sports
ACT: 29-30
URM

Any suggestions for reach schools worth shooting for?

USC, FSU, NYU, and Rutgers.

Loyola Marymount!(Yes, I am their biggest fan on college confidential!)

How much can the friend afford?

Good question Erin’s Dad.
I am not knowledgeable on financial aid, the FAFSA etc. Parents of the student already have one in college, and it is my understanding that mainly loans were offered there. I am not sure if that was due to limited ability of that school to give generous aid or if EFC is too high.
I know that the family said that they can swing the instate tuition and room and board, which would run about 20 k, above that, I believe they are looking for aid or merit money.
I understand that with the lack of details it is hard to make good recommendations, but appreciate suggestions, nevertheless.

She should put “net price calculator” and/or “financial aid estimator” into the search boxes of each school’s web site. This includes any that she may consider a safety – if the school is unaffordable, it is not a safety.

Thanks for the suggestion on exploring financial safeties and I will pass it on. My understanding is that the instate options are both academic and financial safeties, so they are covered there and that they are looking for reaches.

Understanding that if the f.a. or merit isn’t sufficient, then the school will be a no go, but they were looking for the student to throw her hat into the ring of one or two more selective schools.

USC, although comfortable with the location, was deemed too much of a rah-rah athletic school with too heavy a Greek emphasis. Which may rule out my suggestion of ASU’s Barrett’s Honors College, as well.

Lewis & Clark, Occidental, Whitman, Willamette.
