hi everyone, I am 1/4 Cuban but have always identified with the Hispanic culture (esp. food and traditions) but I do not speak spanish at home and have only taken it in school. i am pretty good (i got an 800 on the sat II and a 5 on the AP) but i have an american accent and don’t think i would be able to speak it with friends when english is so tempting (although i could probably understand what ppl would be saying).
ANYWAYS, my question is mainly for people who have been members of latino student organizations (particularly cuban). if i wanted to join the Cuban-American studnets association in college, do the members tend talk just in spanish or would it be an english and/or spanish type thing? would they exclude me or anything because I dont speak spanish like them?

yeah you would be considered an outcast…whatever happens do not let them find out you are a muggle

Latinos tend to talk in Spanish when around each other. Why can’t you speak Spanish if you’ve studied it so much? And an American accent? If you’re pronouncing it correctly, you should be able to speak it well enough.

It will be very awkward for you.

But I think you should go for it, and make an effort.
It’s okay to mess up.

ya dood, and after a while you’ll get better @ speaking. i struggle at times, but when i go to buenos aires for a week i get into 100% spanish.

what i mean by an american accent is that even tho ppl born and raised in the us who speak spanish think i have a perfect accent, native speakers can still tell its not my 1st language. so even a club, not necessarily affinity housing, would probably be too awkward? is there any way to check it out? btw armando, have you done a club and affinity housing or just 1?

meh, its not worth the embarrasment/awkwardness. thanx ppl!

Why wouldn’t you? I go to our school’s Latino club meetings all the time and I’m not even Hispanic! Yeah, there’s lots of Spanglish being spoken but it’s not a big deal if you don’t speak perfect Spanish- I know I sure don’t.

I know that at my school, cultural student organizations are open to anyone who has any interest in that culture. Since you are part Cuban and you embrace it, I don’t see why it would be a big deal. In the Black Student Association meetings here we get half black and non-black kids all the time.
