High school graduation is a time to talk about dreams for the future, but for the Laurel Highlands High School valedictorian, his dream has already come true.

Seth Packrone found out that his dream of attending Harvard University came true on March 30, but he had little time to celebrate.

“It was hard to celebrate when I had to be on an airplane for NYU in eight hours,” Packrone said. “I was pleasantly surprised.”

New York University was offering a full scholarship, and Duke University had offered to fly him down to their campus for a tour, but Packrone already knew where he wanted to go.

“Harvard was my first choice,” Packrone said, adding that his second choice was Yale. “I thought I had the same chance at either one.”

“We knew he would be accepted to one of them,” said Packrone’s mother, Mary Packrone. “We just didn’t know which one it would be.”

Packrone said he applied to Harvard during Christmas break, adding that he sent his application, essays and teacher recommendations out a couple days before the deadline.

“There was no guarantee of getting in there,” Packrone said. “There’s not much separating the people who get in and the people who don’t.”

Along with the love and support from his family, Packrone said his peers and his teachers have been supportive and proud that he is the first person from Laurel Highlands High School to go onto Harvard.

“If we would have won a million dollars, we would have been just as excited,” Mary Packrone said. …"
